Objectives

Mental Health is a topic that is still not widely discussed enough within communities throughout the world. The National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs as a Rural Youth Organisation have had a Mental Health Campaign running for 4 years now with the aim to raise awareness of Mental Illness and break down the stigma associated. Rural areas are particularly important to focus on as many workers/families/young people and business can be isolated from day to day often with poor connectivity and road networks. In England suicide is the biggest killer of U35's and it is something that the farming/rural community can relate to with an average of 1 suicide a week coming from rural communities. It is a fact that 1 in 4 people in their lifetime will suffer a mental health illness - so what are we doing about tackling the stigma and ensuring the help is there when needed? Findings from the World Health Organisation from 2014 tell us that in high-income countries in the EU 3.5 males commit suicide for every female. Yet in low and middle-income countries in Europe the suicide rate is as high as 4.1 males for every female. Suicide accounts for 17.6% of all deaths among young adults aged 15-29 in high-income countries. It is ranked the second leading cause of death globally and in Europe among this age group, following road traffic accidents. Moreover, 90% of suicides can be attributed to mental illness in high-income countries. Despite this data, only 13 European countries are however known to have a national suicide strategy. The aim of 'Sharing and Caring in a Democratic and Inclusive European Community' is that European Rural Youth learn how to recognise signs of Mental Illness, develop competencies in how to deal with different situations and that they will be inspired to take learning's back to their countries and spread the message to ensure healthy rural communities for the future. The objectives of the project: - to raise awareness of Mental Illness through sharing knowledge/understanding of Mental Illness and explore different countries/organisations Mental Health strategies - sharing best practice - to exchange creative ideas, methods and activities with regards to positively combating the Stigma that Mental Health has surrounding it still - explore the democracies of each country and youth organisation - linking that to community life, pressures, methods of creating strategies/policies and how they are disseminated - focusing on businesses within rural communities exploring strategies they have in place to ensure good health and well-being for themselves and their workforce - empower young people to develop, strengthen and support their local communities ensuring inclusive for all for the future
