Objectives

The University of Lincoln has been involved in the international meeting of nursing students from different European countries over the past 5 years. We wish to continue this work and hold a conference with nursing students in 2019 due to the positive feedback from all countries from previous conferences. The project is focused on adolescent health and wellbeing. The previous conference examined key issues pertinent to an ageing society and this current project aims to build on this concept of age with exploring topical issues when working with younger people. The workshops will explore selected topical issues surrounding working with adolescents including those of sexual and reproductive health, mental health issues such as self-harm, eating disorders, anxiety and depression, and substance use including drugs and alcohol awareness. The topics will focus on the ethical and legal positions from each country, and students will engage in cultural comparisons. An exploration of the policy and service provision in each country, and the nurses’ role in these services, will be included as well as exploration of the population demographics such as religions, migrant populations and social circumstances. The role media plays in these topics will be examined in regards to prevention, education and how this influences society’s views. The work will focus on allowing the students to understand how they are directly involved in the shaping of social processes, policy and healthcare delivery. The students will bring different views and experiences which they can exchange to identify similarities and differences and gain a deeper understanding of how these issues are present across Europe. This knowledge and skills built will help the young people to care for their local communities in their nursing careers. The key objectives are: Objective 1: To support an ongoing network of team leaders from participating countries to further enhance their ability and experience of teaching culturally specific and sensitive issues to young people. Objective 2: To deliver a series of lecturer and student led workshops across three key themes in adolescent health. Objective 3: To equip student nurses with key competences and skills for their professional development and an awareness of cross cultural similarities and differences in policy and practice relating the adolescent health. Objective 4: To promote the cascading of experiences and learning back to the home countries through dissemination activities following the main event. The activities will enable students to develop language and communication skills alongside intercultural awareness. This assists with the barriers of international movement, encouraging students to realise the benefits of international mobility. The workshops will promote key competency development in generating new ideas, leadership and project management. We aim to increase the students’ confidence in speaking and presenting in international public forums and working together in mixed country groups to achieve outcomes for the workshops. The Youthpass tool will be used to meet the key competencies outlined in this, and to enable students to demonstrate the impact the conference has had. Intercultural awareness will be a key outcome for all students as they will be learning about other countries health and social care systems, as well as their general interaction with others from these countries, developing social competence.
