Objectives

The idea behind the Youth Exchange "CY.B.RU.S" (Cyprus, Belgium, Russia, Scotland) was to create a project that would promote healthy lifestyle and cultural diversity through presenting and sharing traditional European sports, games and outdoor activities. The countries were chosen based on their UEFA 2020 Euro Qualifiers group. All the above countries were in the same group and their football national teams played matches against each other. The main aim of the project was to preserve and promote the art and culture of the different countries as well as to raise awareness about other European nations, learn about their origins and thus to fight against harming prejudices. The specific objectives that the youth exchange aimed to achieved were as follows: - promoting cultural diversity on the European continent through presenting Europe’s multicultural character in the form of games, sports and outdoor activities that are traditional in different European countries; -promoting the importance of healthy lifestyle through practicing different physical activities and stressing the positive results that they produce; -raising awareness for the importance of accepting cultural diversity through non-formal learning workshops aimed at presenting the benefits of EU’s multiculturalism; -improving the capacities of youth organizations and competencies of youth leaders for delivering beneficial youth activities in their communities aimed at activating young people, including people with fewer opportunities. During the Youth Exchange, the participants had the chance to share and demonstrate sports, games and outdoor activities that are traditional for their country, and together as a group, watched the football game between national teams of Cyprus and Scotland on 16th November 2019. In addition to this primary activity, through an NGO presentation, intercultural learning workshops, European citizenship workshops, the participants had an opportunity to tackle the topics of active European citizenship, fighting discrimination, cultural diversity and European cooperation. 44 young people from Cyprus, Belgium, Russia and Scotland participated in this Youth Exchange, in which they engaged in performing sports, games, outdoor and other physical activities, and interacted with people from different cultures and with different cultural, social, religious, sexual orientation or other specific background. The central objective was to raise awareness on young people and communities on the importance of the promotion of non-formal education, using sports as the integration medium within local communities, so that they may develop a tolerant and reflective attitude towards people from different countries. Within 9 days we created together a group field of trust, transparency and openness in which we could show ourselves without being afraid of being hurt and seeing others in their depth. We also learned to support each other, to give and receive feedback. This experience has shown us that it is possible to live together in love, cooperation and respect, no matter how different we are. During their stay, the participants enjoyed a range of activities such as team games, workshops, presentations of traditional stories and outdoor activities. As well as this, they had the chance to present their respective countries through intercultural nights full of foods, drinks, music and dances. The youth exchange broke down barriers and stereotypes around young people from other countries and built bridges between them. CY.B.RU.S. thus helped to change the attitudes and behaviours of young people towards diversity and discrimination and encouraged adults to recognize the value of young people’s contribution to society at local, national and international levels. Non-formal education constituted the main methodology applied, supported by formal and informal elements such as face-to-face presentations, meeting with local authorities, media, citizens and youngsters not directly involved in the exchange, public presentations. The project had a strong role in fostering tolerance and active participation on young people, insofar as they are amongst people from other regions of Europe and they share experience and ideas about different subjects. This way, young people understood that their experiences and thoughts fit, sometimes, in the same line of thinking of other young people (vice-versa), causing them to feel like a part of European community. On the other hand, having the opportunity to discuss subjects like gender or race gives them other points of view about these issues, allowing them to reflect and reconsider, should they so choose. The youth exchange focused on cultural stereotypes and prejudices as the major reasons of intolerance and discrimination; on cultural differences and its understanding and accepting, which helped to build more inclusive society and show the colorfulness and multiculturalism of European countries.
