Objectives

Europe as an area of peace, freedom, and democracy can only flourish if its inhabitants can develop and sustain a shared European identity. This project focuses on the cornerstones of the Union: its shared values. The history of their genesis and significance will be explored by young participants that are searching for works of art that tell this story: the songs of liberation from and resistance against fascism during the Second World War. Reflecting on these roots is key to understanding and appreciating today's Europe. By encouraging the participants not only to reflect the artworks from this period but to become artists themselves in the further course of the project, the project aims to open up a new perspective on the connection of culture and politics. In the process of research, critique, and reflection, the participants examine the historical artworks and, supported by professional artists, move on to co-create their own artworks that connect historical developments to the here and now. Within the partnership of cultural and political education, they become ambassadors of the European idea. Created during the youth encounter, the artworks carry the spirit of a united Europe and its shared values. The works are to be presented both at the place of the youth encounter and in the countries of origin of the participants. In this manner, the Youth Exchange strengthens the development of a European identity not only among the participants but also beyond and thus contributes to the safeguarding of shared values in the EU.
