Objectives

Within the framework of the youth exchange "Unlocking Memories - Remembering the Past, Shaping the Future", the participants gained knowledge about the cultures of remembrance and commemoration in Germany, Greece and Italy and dealt with topics and countries that were previously unknown or little familiar to them. They took a look at history and dealt with the Second World War and its consequences. They realized how the past and the way it is dealt with still determines social and political discussions and can arouse suspicion. They also understood the power of ideologies (especially nationalism, fascism and National Socialism) and are now more aware of the structures, contents and strategies of the so-called New Right in Europe. The project intended to create awareness and understanding for the different cultures of memory, to intensify intercultural and intergenerational dialogue, to promote the values of freedom, tolerance and respect for human rights, and to strengthen European identity. It succeeded in contributing to a European collective culture of remembrance and reconciliation.
