Objectives

Model International Criminal Court (MICC) is a simulation of the International Criminal Court (ICC) for young people aged between 15 and 19, as well as youth workers from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Germany and Poland. The aim of the project is the further development, application and dissemination of the methodical-didactic MICC methods for (historical) human rights education. In particular, the methods should be disseminated in the countries of the Eastern Partnership and made available to professionals who have access to such educational offerings. For this purpose, youth workers will be given the opportunity to exchange ideas about methods of non-formal education, to network and to try out and evaluate them later during two youth exchanges, after attending one or both of the seven-day training courses which will take place in Poland and Georgia. The basis for teaching methods is on the one hand the 14 years of experience in the project MICC and on the other hand the methods of JustNow - A Toolbox for Teaching Human Rights, a project of Key Action 2 (Strategic Partnership). JustNow is an interactive learning platform (www.teachjustnow.eu) that makes the abstract topic of human rights tangible for young people and methodically supports youth workers. Participants are guided and supported by these methods to adapt to their local contexts and to use with young people from rural areas on the ground. In addition, young people and youth workers will have the opportunity to participate in two international youth exchanges in Poland and Georgia, to gain a deeper understanding of human rights education and historical background of simulated cases, as well as training in criminal law, which will engender a deeper learning experience. The young participants take on the roles of prosecutors, defense lawyers, judges and journalists and deal with historical cases that have been heard before international tribunals (Nuremberg Trials, ICTY and the ICTR). Through the MICC project and the framework activities, the participants are introduced to key issues of human rights protection, basic concepts of justice and the rule of law. MICC encourages young people to engage with and enforce human rights within international criminal law. As a result, they also become familiar with the internal affairs of the judiciary. The participants learn to look at their everyday life with open eyes and to understand themselves as part of an active civil society. This awakens the European awareness of the young participants and also highlights the achievements of a democratic and peaceful European alliance. Our participants are encouraged to actively support the observance of democratic principles. Through critical reflection and exchange, they get to know and understand different perspectives. With the help of the multinational character and the group work, MICC also lays the foundation for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding between participants of different nationalities, religions and cultures, which, beyond the project, stimulates the international cooperation of the participating partner institutions. The mobility of youth workers is encouraged. The project partners make a contribution to intercultural dialogue. The joint project will create and further develop a sustainable international network in which knowledge and methods of non-formal education can be exchanged and a discussion on current human rights issues and ICC research can be conducted.
