Objectives

YOU PERFORM was and is a European participatory youth exchange project that wants to engage young people aged 14 to 20 from France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands and Serbia to work together creatively in the field of performance art. The project partners understand performance as an approach to start a creative process by focusing on their own life experiences. The young people got support from professional artistic coaches who gave insight into artistic fields such as film, music, text work or dance in order to express their own topics and questions as subject of their performances and as the starting point to discover new forms of selfexpression and dialogue. Inclusiveness and democratic participation are immanent in the artistic form of performance. Therefore it is a perfect method to be used with young people from different backgrounds to enable them to strengthen their cultural awareness, to share their experiences and values and to establish understanding and tolerance. All theaters planned to address young people from very diverse social backgrounds including young people with fewer opportunities. The goal was to represent the entire spectrum of the young generation or at least bring together a very broad social bandwidth. The participants did not need any artistic training or experience. They started the dialogue from who they are and how they live and think. The field of performance art gives them the freedom to explore different artistic forms like dance, spoken theater, music, video art etc. for their concerns. By the method of perforamcne art we tried to give them the opportunity to strengthen their skills in perception, in cultural awareness, in self-expression, in planning and in getting into dialogues with each other within the shared creative processes. In the end our goal was to bring young people from different communities and backgrounds together.
