It is very important that all actors in public education help to prevent xenophobic and antidemocratic radicalization of young people, especially with regard to recent European (and worldwide) trends of regression and increasing Euro-scepticism, as well as the reinforced national (and nationalistic) alignment of politics and last but not least the migration-caused social challenges and the seemingly easy (right) populistic answers. This is even more true for institutions of educational aid as the clients usually are disadvantaged or come from unstable social or family conditions and have in many cases experienced fundamental wmotional uncertainty – and thus often respond easily to (right-wing) extremistic or xenophobic thoughts. A participatory and value-oriented education which offers to young people democratic functions to experience and implement in their own living environment induces self-efficacy and thus strengthens the childrens’ resilience and resistivity against radical tendencies and authoritarian structures. In residential settings it is the pedagogical constitution of the daily life that forms the core instrument of teaching democratic values and functions in order to integrate them into the young clients’ basic moral mindset. The project „Learnig form each other – shaping democracy“ aims to increase the civil society integration and to avoid xenophobic and anti-democratic radicalization of young people in residential settings of youth welfare by implementing extensive democratic and participatory principles and responsibilities in their life at "institutional homes".
