Climate change is one of the most serious challenges facing our world today. Our planet is experiencing significant and accelerated climate change that began over a century ago. Most scientists agree that the planet is warming up faster than ever because of the vast amount of greenhouse gases that humans are pumping into the atmosphere. This includes activities such as burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), driving cars and cutting down forests. Many of us have seen – and even experienced – the effects of climate change. But it is not just about extreme weather like floods, droughts and hurricanes. Slower and less noticeable changes in our climate have the potential to completely alter the way we live. Our planet is warming fast. Human activities are causing this change and we are beginning to see the consequences all over the world. The more we disturb the climate, the greater the risks of dangerous changes and the harder and more expensive it will be to limit future changes and adapt to the unavoidable impacts. Erasmus+ eco project “25 Years UNFCCC - New generation Speak Up for Climate change” took place in Agros (Cyprus) from 25th of August until 02nd of September, 2021. 55 young people aged 18-30 years from 5 EU countries (Germany, Cyprus, Greece, Lithuania and Hungary) came together for a week of awareness expansion about current environmental issues, learning and experiencing how youth can make a difference for the future of our Planet. Project’s mission was to create ideas how to be more sustainable and live your life more eco-friendly. Our belief is that if we work together we can create the world which is cleaner and liveable for many generations to come. Planet Earth cannot stand the current rhythm of world population growth. The superficiality of human behaviour is not sustainable anymore and is constantly putting the Earth in danger. Pollution has a great impact on mankind and environment as a whole. It leads to environmental degradation, human health issues, global warming, ozone layer depletion, infertile land and more. Thus finding a remedy is a top priority. That is why it is fundamental to start a societal transition towards a green economy and lifestyle. The main aim of the project was to head towards a change in European population’s behaviour and habits in order to reach an eco-friendly lifestyle. The main goal of our youth exchange was to develop respect for nature and form an ecological culture, spirituality, the consciousness of young people. The ecological culture of any person, the state is a component in the system of world environmental policy and all spheres of life. It is recognized also that the lack of spirituality and ecological culture restrains the transition to the constant development and resolution of the most acute environmental problems of humankind and civilizations. The most important thing in this field is education. Therefore, young people need to know what ecology is, to understand the issue of sustainable development and care of the planet in order to become a person with responsibility related to the issue of nature protection. It is necessary to know how level of awareness affects the pollution of the environment. To instill love and respect for nature among the participants is one of the main objectives set by us on the project. Along with this, our project sets itself the following tasks: - Teach young people to save water, do not pollute the atmosphere, save energy, collect waste separately and give second life to used objects. - Format the participant's interest into saving the natural environment, avoiding the pollution of nature. Develop the analytical and critical thinking skills of young people, interpersonal communication skills, individual and collective creativity, etc. - Educate moral and spiritually rich qualities among young people. - Cultivate a respectful attitude to nature. - Help in the development of analytical and critical thinking skills of young people. - Raise awareness about environmental issues even to the people who were not interested in nature in the first place - Living more mindfully and exchanging ideas and knowledge on the topic from people all over Europe - Bringing to the surface the concerns of young people about the environment- Create connections between people and the environment - Boosting young people’s physical, mental and social life Through the youth exchange we brought young people in touch with their close environment. Youth pinpointed the environmental problems (local and broader) and brainstormed solutions about these issues (personal and broader level). Young people came together to learn about and provide ideas for the problems that every country faces. In addition during the project we gave young people the chance to change their behavior toward the environment, learn and practice active citizenship, disseminate their knowledge to their familial and local environment and put pressure on future policymaking.
