Objectives

The project 'Cross-cultural solidarity' is a project aiming to engage youth in the civil society. It aims to understand the current refugee situation in collaboration with youth from several countries affected by it. The particular aim is to have intercultural discussions and understand what happened and how we – as civil society - can act. The project will use that knowledge to create civic engaged citizens, sharing the impact to strengthen solidarity with refugees on both local/national/international level. The basic methodology in the project is to look back at a specific case, understand it with a cross-cultural approach that can give a meaningful discussion about both the EU, the particular nations and the civil society. To get this knowledge the project will engage the participants in a programme that will develop their engagement in how we as citizens can take action, leadership, a toolbox for understanding and discussing complex social, economic and political questions and in the end to produce a platform to communicate a message to a broader public using the outreach and international network through the internet. Concretely the activities will consist of workshops to research and discuss EU and the refugee situation, visits to organizations working with refugees and activists working in Turkey, a phase of creating our own way of being and sharing our work as active citizens. This phase will consist of creating an online platform for exchange and debate of ideas, opinions, activities and creative work about the current refugee situation, but also to create these materials for the platform. The reason and desire of the project comes from a need to discuss what solidarity is today in a world where the issues of societies are no longer isolated to the place of action. When people who have fled their home, walk the highways of Denmark in hope of a secure destination or are arriving by dangerous overfilled boats on the coast of Italy and Greece, the issues that caused these people to flee their homes are something all must understand and face. For this reason the question of solidarity is so present today both in EU, in national politics but also in the civil society. Especially for the youth as they are the change makers of tomorrow. This is why 'Cross-cultural solidarity' will create a space for 20 young people to meet in a Youth Exchange in Eskisehir Turkey to explore, research and reflect upon the question of solidarity. They will through non-formal learning and with their ideas put increasing focus on solidarity in Europe. Through the objectives of the project regarding sense of initiative, confidence, responsibility and critical thinking the youth participating in the project will be promoters and facilitators for active citizenship on a local, national and international level. They will create an online platform with the aim to promote and discuss civic engagement and activism as a democratic practice and the current refugee situation especially in Europe. Through the project and the online platform reflections about how a democratic and solidary Europe could be and what role the civil society should take will be freely accessible and up for debate with all people interested in the subject. The project will use different non-formal methods to enhance an understanding of the refugee situation historically and politically, but also focus on the ethical and philosophical areas with intercultural dialogue and solidarity. The objective for this project is for the participants to: -Learn more about the refugee situation -Learn about how EU has handled the current refugee situation and why -Enhance critical thinking and discussions -Strengthen the role of young people as active actors in the civil society, also when it comes to global issues -Strengthen the sense of initiative, confidence and responsibility, when it comes to social issues -Through critical thinking and research understand how to create better and equal opportunities for all citizens regardless of nationality/economic situation/gender/religion/culture/sexuality/etc. -Reflect upon activism as potential democratic practice and tool for being a change maker as a young person -Reflect upon how a democratic and solidary Europe should look like and in particular how oneself can be a part of that process -To create an online platform for active citizenship activities which will give both skills in planning, reflection, critical thinking and technology
