Objectives

During the last decade we have been bystanders of impressive social movements and political transitions in a number of countries, like Velvet Revolution in Armenia (April 2018), current political situation in Estonia concerning with the 1st place winner political party’s becoming opposition, pro-Western revolutionary change of power in Georgia, etc. A common claim in all these movements was the call for a real democracy and a change in the system in favour of the citizens. In this context, citizen journalism has been declared as a tool to rebuild and improve a withered democracy in parallel with traditional journalism. Scholars usually highlight two main reasons to argue that: citizen journalism empowers citizens and also diversifies the news agenda and thus contributes to revitalize the public sphere. This was accepted and greatly emphasized by young people from Armenia, Estonia, Georgia, Italy, Greece and Poland who were participating in Media Literacy youth exchange in 2018. There was widespread interest towards civic journalism considering it as a ''democratic opportunity'' to be engaged in the discourse of open information rather than making it a closed circle. A number of formal and informal surveys claim that participants strive to get deeper in citizen journalism, as they consider it as an ‘’accessible tool’’ to raise their voices. Where once they were just readers, now it has rapidly expanding opportunities to both create and interact with content. Young people are interested in distributing self-generated messages over computer networks. Proceeding from these, this project seeks to empower capacities of young people in maintaining civic journalism with an aim to raise social awareness and active citizenship. The objectives of the project are to: 1.Equip youth with basic journalism skills to take advantage of new media to publish news, views and information 2.Develop youth's critical thinking and political consciousness to question, evaluate and analyse what they hear and read 3.Encourage young people to become active and engaged citizens in their communities/region 4.Facilitate networking and further co-operation between participants and their organizations for issues concerning civic journalism across EU member and neighboring countries.
