Objectives

Faced with the intertwined economic, ecologic and social challenges that destabilize European countries but also the biosphere of our highly interdependent world, it is easy for people, and especially youth whose future is at stake, to sink into despair and apathy or violence. In turn, such feelings can aggravate the problems of unemployment, injustice and social disintegration thus undermining our ability to effectively manage the necessary transition towards an ecologically sustainable human economy. And yet, around Europe, a growing number of solutions to common challenges are developing around the sustainable management of soil, water, food production, the restoration and preservation of biological and cultural diversity, and more effective ways to self-govern and manage economy. Permaculture, agroforestry and regenerative agriculture are at the core of these solutions offering and integrated system of ethics, principles and a multidisciplinary toolbox to address the aforementioned complex problems in rural and urban contexts at any scale. PermaHabitat training aims at spreading the knowledge, skills and attitudes of Permaculture education and design via current practitioners, so that a growing number of people gain the motivation and resources to become active agents and act towards designing their own regenerative systems at the regional and local scale. For this purpose we propose to train youth workers and youth leaders engaged in action for sustainability so that they can improve the quality of the projects they are involved in and to transmit efficiently the experience and skills gained to the audiences they work with, and especially young people with fewer opportunities. As such the training aims firstly to generate skill acquisition among participants and the development of their professional competences, their attitudes and their capacity to act. It aims to have a triggering effect, making their commitment and investment stronger in their daily work. The resulting empowerment for youth workers is expected to increase the socio-professional integration of the target groups the participants support, increase the inclusion of people in sustainable and regenerative projects and promote the emergence of permaculture, agroforestry and regenerative agriculture initiatives locally. It will be a contribution towards fostering natural and human diversity, promoting human rights and responsibilities and intensifying social and ecological connection.
