Objectives

The project « Promoting Rights and Opportunities to Understand Diversity (P.R.O.U.D.) » is coordinated by Solidarités Jeunesses with the full support of the Alliance Gender Equality Working Group. The partners are all belonging to the Alliance of European Voluntary Service Organisations, which are all well-established actors on the field of International Volunteer Service (IVS), we have been organising long and short-term projects for years, for Europeans and youth from overseas as well. To fight against the discriminatory behaviour based on gender identity and sexual orientation, the growth of populist and xenophobic movements in the different countries of the European continent, and an exponential increase in attacks on the basis of gender and sexual orientation, there is a common need of several organisations to contrast gender based discrimination, sexism, harassment, and LGBTQI+ phobia in their workcamps and voluntary activities. Many kinds of discriminative situations such as sexist task allocations, sexist attitudes, homophobia, sexual harassment, and sexual abuse are happening in projects. To tackle these issues, the project is dedicated to the promotion and the development of new gender sensitive tools and approaches to apply in IVS activities by sharing of knowledge and expertise to address gender issues in order to make projects more equal and safe for all the volunteers. As part of the creation of a multicultural and inclusive Europe, addressing the issue is a way of building a society where the entire population is taken into account, which includes women and LGBTQ+ community. P.R.O.U.D. aims to contribute to the understanding and respect for the diversity. With the objectives of raising awareness on gender sensitive topics among youth workers, camp leaders and trainers, empower the IVS activities where they will be involved and provide them with new tools and methods to contrast gender-based discrimination we aim to: - effectively provide local partners and camp leaders with tools and information regarding gender issues and how to deal with gender based conflicts in IVS; - increase the quality of IVS projects and to foster the youth workers’ skills growth and the camp leaders and local partners’ awareness raising process in different sensitive topics around gender issues; - develop specific pedagogical approaches in the work with volunteers and to experiment new methods to promote the active involvement and participation of the camp leaders in the fight against sexist and not-gender-inclusive approaches; - promote gender sensitive approaches and contrast gender based conflicts in IVS by using existing approaches and educational methodologies; - capitalize the results of the work done in the previous years, setting the ground for a larger widespread of gender sensitive approaches in the network; - promote through youth work and IVS, gender sensitive approaches and to broaden the networking on this topic; - further develop the expertise in the field of IVS and innovative NFE approaches targeted to contrast gender bases conflicts. Most of the partners have a specific focus on the inclusion of young people in their workcamps and realise numerous actions with their local partner to foster the participation of volunteers from all over the world, so to ensure intercultural learning and local communities development. Moreover NFE encourages the horizontality within the learning process: information and knowledge are shared in a mutual understanding perspective, giving value to “diversity” as a common, enriching element in human beings. There is a common goal of widening the perspective for what concerns methods and tools to tackle gender issues. Overall, this will strengthen the International Volunteer Service movement, widely spread the idea in the whole world to a new generation of young people. This is a way of fighting radicalisation of youth and our contribution to create a peaceful, understanding, including Europe and world in general.
