Objectives

The aim for carrying out this project is to provide young people with an opportunity to explore and engage in the area of Global Warming through learning best practice and how to contribute to sustainable development both in the local community, nationally and internationally. At a regional youth council meeting with the Irish participants through consultation they identified Finland as a country of best practice in the area of sustainable development. Thirty young people on the regional council from four different towns Fermoy, Midleton, Mitchelstown and Mallow in Cork are the Irish Participants. These young people range from 13-17 years. The young people felt they knew very little about best practice in sustainable development and would like to develop on this more through a project. From this consultation it was evident that these are the issues which need to be addressed, so the project aims to support and empower young people to explore, learn and develop in these areas. The young people are committed to raising awareness in adults and young people of the impact of human activity on the natural environment, from a local and global perspective. The Finnish participants suggested that there's an invested interest already from the young people to work on the topics of climate change and making a difference from their own youth councils reality. In Finnish partner stated that it can be seen in smaller communities that there is a need to support young people's competences in working as youth council members (civic competences) as well as allowing possibilities for young people to link and unite around Europe. This particular group of young people have an interest in outdoor education so when creating a project idea they suggested that the tool to explore the objectives could be done through outdoor education.g people in Finland and Ireland. By exploring these areas this will empower the participants and their identity as a European.
