Objectives

Food products and sources are being wasted throughout the entire supply chain from the first agricultural production to the last household consumption. It is known that approximately one third (about 1.3 billion tonnes) of food produced for human consumption is lost annually. This situation means that wasted use of the majority of the resources used in the production of wasted food and greenhouse gas emissions caused by the use of food production is also wasted. We can see how these situations, which seem irrelevant to each other at first sight, are connected with the butterfly effect. Food consumption in middle and high income/developed countries; even if it is still suitable for human consumption, is wasted and significant amount of food is going into trash. Two cases, two figures and a huge gap... According to the most recent data, 800 million people in the world currently struggle with hunger, while around 700 million people are fighting obesity. How are we aware of the contrast and tragedy between these two situations? While so many people in the world are struggling with hunger, the fact that food waste is a trillion dollar problem reveals another contradiction. Every day tons of food and eatables are thrown in the trash. Here are some facts and numbers about food consumption and waste: Every year, 1,3 billion tons of food is wasted around the world. The wasted food corresponds to a loss of approximately $ 1 trillion. Food waste in Europe alone is enough to feed 200 million hungry people. Only a quarter of the food wasted is enough to feed 795 million people starving in the world. 6 million tons of bread is being wasted every year in Italy. 3-to-2 of all-inclusive meals in hotels go to waste. 8 tons of food per second is being wasted. 5 tons of vegetables are thrown per second, 7 tons of water is wasted per second. In order to contribute to the decrease of these numbers and to raise awareness about the issue, we realized our project with the following objectives: *To raise awareness on minimizing and reducing food wastage, *To encourage people to share by empathizing, *To prove that another world perspective without prejudices is possible, *To contribute to the reduction of xenophobia, racism and discrimination, *To draw attention to gender equality, *To contribute to the dissemination and visibility of Erasmus Plus program.
