Objectives

The ‘Green Spaces for Social Inclusion’ (GESSI) project, funded by Erasmus+ KA105: Mobility of learners and staff, aimed at building more inclusive, sustainable and prosperous societies through the competences’ enhancement of youth workers in using educational methods connected with urban gardens. Urban Gardens relate to cultivation practices and techniques that can foster social inclusion by encouraging direct contact with nature and open-air activities that promote respect for the environment, plants and animals, innovation in agricultural practices, eco-sustainability, renewable energy and ecological waste management of waste. Ultimately, urban gardens foster social aggregation and cultural exchange around the themes of organic farming and can play a socially useful role for the most disadvantaged members of society through activities revolving around organic farming. There was and is an urgent need of innovative practices that could strengthen the role of the youth work in the development of inclusive, economically prosperous and healthy societies, while young people need safe and recreational spaces that will offer them to be in contact with nature and where they can interact with each other. Facing the pressure needed to fight social exclusion, particularly in the given historical period of the covid-19 pandemic, social inclusion is one of the central goals of European policies, especially in relation to employment, lifelong learning and vocational guidance. The 7-days Training Course, hold in Palermo from 1st to 9th June 2022, involved 29 gender balanced youth and youth workers from organisations from Italy, Turkey, Poland, Bulgaria, Portugal, Spain, Lithuania and Romania, enabling the professional development of those who work in education, training and youth with a view to innovating and improving the quality of teaching, training and youth work across Europe. GESSI has built upon bottom-up solutions that could satisfy the importance and urgency of building an environmentally sustainable and greener Europe, guiding young people on how they themselves can contribute and work for this common goal. Through the enhancement of their competencies in using educational methods connected with urban gardens, the project has shown how these (and their different typologies) can grow a fertile ground for social inclusion and personal development, not only as individuals (the person) but also as groups of people (a community, a school class, employees in an organisation, youth workers and young members in a social centre, etc.). GESSI involved two main target groups, or co-Experts: Youth workers that are engaged in community work with marginalised youth, refugees, community members and young people. Project managers, community leaders, educators, facilitators, social workers, intercultural mediators that are interested in improving their ability in using urban gardens as a tool for the social inclusion of excluded groups. Specific Objectives were: SO1. To equip youth workers and community members with innovative and effective tools in order to engage marginalised young people in setting up and maintaining the urban gardens as a fertile ground for social inclusion and personal development; SO2. To increase the capacities, attractiveness and international dimension of organisations active in the education, training and youth fields so that they are able to offer activities and programmes that better respond to the needs of individuals, within and outside Europe. SO3. To strengthen the cooperation and the share of good practices among EU organisations thus contributing to capacity building for quality youth work within their organisations and developing educational methods based on the management of urban gardens. The project’s tangible results include: R1. GESSI Network: EU organisations united by the efforts in working on empowerment of youth groups with the aim of improving their personal development and socio-professional integration through the involvement of youth workers. R2. GESSI experiential Learning Training week: combine sustainable ways to grow urban gardens (selection and disposition of plants, how these are connected and can help each other, adapting to the different periods of the year, how the irrigation works, how teamwork is done in the garden, how to keep the tools tied up, how to fix them) with the education of methodologies of a sustainable life in a community (conflict resolution, teambuilding, inclusion, understanding interdependency, and so forth). R3. GESSI Learning Guide: concrete non-formal learning tools for organising new activities at their local level that can engage the active participation of marginalised youth.
