Madiba SCS and Kerry Diocesan Youth Service (KDYS) decided to apply together after reading the letter from Orla, an irish young women, ".. I didn’t want others to see me as not good enough instead I wanted to be treated the same way as the boys. So with this theme I believe myself and my group will have the chance to show how women deserve equality in sport and should be included, not excluded... we want to change the perception that men and women aren’t equal in sport and how people are excluded in many different sports because of different personalities, gender, race, religion etc. We feel by experiencing how inequality and exclusion is present within the sports of other countries as well as our own country we will try and reverse this issue to help women be seen as successful people in sport and that everyone should be allowed express themselves through their sport and shouldn’t be excluded.". We truly believe as youth workers we have the responsibility to listen these words and to support as well as possible the process to make this dream come true. Youth workers play a crucial role in creating diverse and inclusive environments that support integration and development of young women. One way to achieve this is through non-formal education principles and methods because this approach is always aimed at empowering young people to reach their unique potential and to be active members of their communities. Through international youth work, young women are given essential tools that equip them to challenge any adversity and inequality they may face. The programme will use peer to peer techniques and the added element of using sports to generate discussion and opportunities of sharing stories and experiences which will highlight the ability and methods of overcoming daily challenges faced by young women in the European context. By implementing this project, the St.Senans Sisters and Madiba group want to raise awareness about gender equality (gender inequalities and challenges/issues) through sports which will transpire in to their daily lives. Objectives: 1) To address the gender inequality faced by women in sports. 2) To allow 24 young women from diverse backgrounds to meet, learn from each other and develop strategies in order to cope with any challenges they may face. 3) To ensure that the diversity of the group, whether it be based on sexuality, economic status, academic ability or demographic factors, enhance the experience for all involved. 4) To inspire the participants to educate their peers in various native sports and activities, whilst maintaining respect and dignity throughout. This programme relates directly to the objectives of Erasmus + through the focus upon human rights and equality.
