Environment and climate change

Objectives

Unrecycled waste is one of the key problems of our environment. Plastic and other kind of waste pollutes our earth, water and air which also contributes to climate change. European Commission has announced that 70% of waste which is found in oceans and beaches consists of one-time plastic products. What is more, in October 2018 EC first time announced that plastic has already entered human’s nutrition chain (http://www.diena.lt/naujienos/pasaulis/ekonomika-ir-politika/es-sutare-uzdrausti-naudoti-dauguma-vienkartiniu-plastikiniu-gaminiu-893818 seen on 2019.03.05) This project was inspired by recent changes in Lithuania, related to solving these problems: commercial ads, marketing campaigns which are seen in the media – people are encouraged to reduce the amount of waste they produce, not to use one-time cups, integrated plastic and glass bottles deposit system; new recycling containers next to block of flats. Many steps are taken towards reducing the amount of waste which gets into landfills, however, many more steps are needed to make this come true. Our youngsters noticed, that despite all these changes, many members from their close environment are not following the recommendations and all this information, although reaches them, doesn’t cause direct action in many fields. Youngsters made a short analysis and asked their friends, further family members from their environment about recycling and deposit system. Information was collected from 23 households. By summarizing the results youngsters noticed that the change which had the biggest effect and caused direct action was deposit system. Households identify that the biggest motivation to use deposit system is “money back”. Deposit system is very good practice and our youngsters would like to share these good examples with youngsters from other countries, where deposit system is still absent. Talking about recycling, although being aware of importance of recycling, households come to many various reasons to justify themselves why they are not doing this. The most popular reasons mentioned were these: Reason no. 1 “we don’t have enough space in the cupboard under sink for additional bin”. It is surprising how often this reason was mentioned, more than half households said that they don’t have enough space under the sink for recycle bin. Reason no. 2 “we don’t produce so much recyclable waste / we have almost nothing to recycle”. Reason no. 3 “recycling containers are further from my home than household waste container" Reason no. 4 “we don’t have place for additional container next to our house” Project’s partners and youngsters agree that recycling is important part of culture / behavior which should be better integrated into our everyday life. All of them come from countries there recycling is not so common as it should and recycled part of waste doesn’t exceed 20%. They don’t have deposit system yet and problems of not recycling are very common and similar with the ones provided by our youngsters. Partners from Romania claim “As we see, informing society is not enough. Society is already informed, most of them are already aware of recycling and consequences of not doing it. What is really needed - direct action. We need and want to effectively encourage society and cause their action of recycling”. According to European Environment Agency, recycling an aluminium can save around 95% of the energy needed to make a new one from raw material and increased recycling can lead to even more increased employment related to recycling (https://www.eea.europa.eu/about-us/competitions/waste-smart-competition/recycling-rates-in-europe/image_view_fullscreen - seen 2019.03.05) Goal: Project will be mainly based on reduce-reuse-recycle method and will seek to encourage 35 young participants and local society members to REDUCE amount of waste they produce; to REUSE things they have already bought and to RECYCLE the waste which they want to throw away by organizing a youth exchange between 29.02.2020-07.03.2020 in Kaunas, Lithuania. Objectives: O1: To raise awareness about consequences of unsorted waste and importance of recycling for 35 young participants and their local communities by the end of the project. O2: To introduce reduce-reuse-recycle method to 35 young participants and their local communities by the end of the project. O3: To encourage 35 young participants and their local communities to take direct action and responsibly recycle waste by the end of the project. Our objectives are directly related to Erasmus+ objectives of: The Inclusion and Diversity Strategy by contributing to: 1) Promote Erasmus+ 2) Reduce obstacles for young people with fewer opportunities to participate in the programme EU Youth strategy 2019-2027 by: * encourage social inclusion and wellbeing of young generations * Connecting youngsters across the EU to promote intercultural understanding, opportunities to learn, work and volunteer abroad.
