Integration of refugeesInclusion - equityYouth (Participation, Youth Work, Youth Policy)

Objectives

The pandemic has dramatically affected the youth sector: very few organizations managed to move their activities online to have a significant outreach to young people – especially to those with fewer opportunities, policymakers have been attempting to develop rapidly a coherent set of measures to tackle the current challenges, while researchers have launched different projects and initiatives to document the impact Covid-19 is having on young people and potentially on their future development. Our project, partnership, and all activities have been affected as well. Our project was based on an issue that is concerning the young people all over Europe, the migration. The main structure of the partnerships was based on the previous cooperation of BIID NGO from Latvia and HARIT from Romania. During our last project, which was held in the summer of 2017, we made a common plan to organize a long-term project, targeting the subject of migration, since both countries were highly affected by the aspects of migration nowadays. Now we felt like the time had arrived and we were capable of organizing long-term cooperation. Migration had recently become a phenomenon of crucial importance for Europe, being it currently shaping its whole history. In fact, more than a million migrants and refugees crossed into Europe in 2015, sparking a crisis as countries struggled to cope with the influx and with integration issues. HARIT recognized that youth organizations and European youth had a great role in addressing this gap. By meeting the refugees/migrants and collecting their stories (needs, dreams, fears, personal stories, journeys, expectations, goals, hopes, competencies, skills, contributions), they provided the host population with accurate and fair information about who refugees were and what were the benefits of welcoming them in the local community, promoting, therefore, an inclusive and tolerant society, able to recognized and valued personal talents and to empower and integrate them. The overall aim of the LTTC was to develop and promote a new positive narrative of inclusion through creative and innovative youth work activities. To train youth workers and youth leaders giving the chance to young Europeans and young refugees and migrants to meet and share and explore their stories in order to match them with the needs of the communities, they lived in. However, all our plans were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, including a vast impact on people and societies.
