ECHOES is an initiative designed by young people from Central and Eastern Europe to direct the attention of European recipients to the uniqueness of the multicultural history of Warmia and Mazury - a unique area where developed social mechanisms of the peaceful coexistence between diverse cultural and ethnic minorities can be an important material for promoting intercultural dialogue in Europe. The main objective of the project will be the implementation of photographic and film workshops in a unique, original cultural environment that will allow creative usage of the undiscovered and unknown space of this region among young people from countries, whose lives are intertwined around the complicated history of Warmia and Mazury (Belarus , Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine). The idea of the project - based on the implementation of the international youth exchange focused on learning about the multicultural tradition and history of Central and Eastern Europe on the example of Warmia and Mazury - was created as part of informal internet discussions by young creators of culture from individual partner organizations, combining in their activities research on immaterial cultural heritage with audiovisual education. The main goal of the project, over time, simultaneously with getting to know by the participants local history and the multicultural identity of Warmia and Mazury, took on an additional value - related to the protection of local culture and memory. The areas of former East Prussia are characterized by an attractive landscape, diversified by historic architectural objects surrounded by rich green areas with an extensive composition layout. The monuments of this region, along with the surrounding greenery, are neglected and forgotten. Some of them, without proper supervision, are inappropriately transformed, losing their important cultural values. The aim of the project will be to document and spread knowledge about the unique atmosphere of Warmia and Mazury as a perfect example of peaceful coexistence of cultural minorities and a reminder to European citizens about the lapsing architecture of this area, which requires care, revitalization, promotional and information activities. The next task of the project is a creative interpretation of these spaces as part of film and photographic workshops to give these places a new meaning. The cultural heritage of Warmia and Mazury is a testimony to the immaterial heritage and the space of creating autonomous, having a distinctive specificity of the local identity. In this region, identity issues are important because Warmia and Mazury before the Second World War was culturally diverse, and after the war - as a result of political decisions and changes in Poland's borders - there were significant demographic changes. Over 70,000 people left their homes, emigrating to Germany, and at the same time, settlers from central Poland, displaced persons from the former Eastern Borderlands, Ukrainian settlers and Lemkos, as well as smaller ethnic groups such as Lithuanians and Belarussians flowed in. As a result of demographic changes, there was a contact between the native population and post-migration communities coming from geographically and culturally remote areas. The workshops aim is to stimulate the interests of young people in the multicultural history of Warmia and Mazury, to save from forgetting the valuable traditions of these areas and to integrate participants in the search for manifestations of different cultures in the material and immaterial heritage of the region. As a result of the project, photographic series and short film etudes will be created, the aim of which will be an artistic interpretation of selected themes from the history of Warmia and Mazury and the life of this multicultural society functioning at the interface of Polish, Lithuanian, Belarusian and Ukrainian culture. The project will be a new and original voice in the currently widely discussed subject of migration. It aims to show the threads of integration of diverse populations in Europe. It has threefold significance. First of all, it aims to sketch cultural diversity within Europe - in opposition to the idea of cultural homogeneity in Europe, in the public discourse often contrasted with the cultures of other regions of the world. Secondly, it serves to highlight the issues of group integration, diverse in terms of culture, behaviors, habits, ideas about life, ways of managing. Thirdly, it aims to integrate the participants, show the features combining supranational cultures and animate intercultural exchange between European societies. The recent history shows the existence of certain cultural stereotypes even in societies with a common cultural heritage and common roots. This project aims to emphasize this common heritage that will allow to build a society aware of its role, the community of supranational and humanistic dimension of the functioning of multicultural societies.
