Objectives

Fortunately, we can say that the exchange "Rural Youth in Action" was a success and that we reached the proposed goals. This was a project that came as a follow-up of another one, called "AgroYouth", which happened in Murter, Croacia, in 2017, and had as main goals the promotion and creation of new small businesses in rural context. The exchange "Rural Youth in Action" sought to continue this promotion of rural entrepreneurship, this time in Serpa, Portugal, with 33 young participants from Portugal, North Macedonia, Estonia, France, Croatia and Romania. We live in a time of great urbanization, in which the countryside and the rural world are being increasingly neglected to the detriment of the exodus to the big cities. This demographic imbalance leads to opportunities and financial problems in European countries and tends to worsen. Just look at the official United Nations forecast, which says that by 2030, 6 out of 10 will live in a big city, a scenario that will increase to 7 out of 10 people by 2050. Rural reality can and should, then, be a window of opportunity , especially for young people, even with a perspective of combating youth unemployment, which is one of the great challenges of today's Europe. Through its activities, the exchange "Rural Youth in Action" sought to promote entrepreneurship in a rural environment, making young people aware of this issue and these opportunities, stimulating creativity and providing bases and skills for the creation of their own employment, in a theoretical and practical way. Therefore, in addition to having contact with the business reality, the educational and vocational part of Serpa, the participants also had the opportunity to create their own business: a jam brand, in which they developed all the steps to create a company seriously. They created the name, the logo, the respective social networks, produced the jam, packaged it, designed the label and put it on sale through the business plan they developed. Therefore, the main objectives of the exchange were: - to raise awareness of 33 participants to the rural reality as a window of opportunity for their professional future; - to empower participants with professional competences and skills in creating their own jobs, stimulating entrepreneurship and creativity; - to empower participants with personal and professional competences skills and aptitudes to intervene in their own community, especially in the primary sector; - to develop a pilot business in the area of rural entrepreneurship, in all its aspects (creation of the business plan, creation of the graphic image, promotion of social networks, product production and its marketing); - to promote diversity and European identity, as well as multicultural dialogue in a rural reality, which is more given to xenophobic prejudices; - promote the values of equality, inclusion, tolerance, human rights and democracy.
