Objectives

The European political arena has recently been marked by a sharp rise in xenophobic & generally hateful discourses. Social networks have acted as a catalyst for many extremist groups with a worrying increase in reported hate speech & violence-inciting content, threatening the European core values. To respond to the need of preventing political radicalization leading to violent extremism, Citizenship education has the potential to promote fundamental common values of co-existence in democratic society, to think critically & to act in a socially responsible manner. In the virtual community most young people today belong to these values & competences can act as protective factors & contribute to preventing the ignition of the radicalization process by helping individuals to read critically & to channel feelings of deception into constructive behaviors such as active citizenship, online & offline. Social networks can represent not only a dangerous threat but also an opportunity to spread alternative narratives: communication & narratives are key to preventing radicalization. In this framework, NEWS? REALLY? WHAT NEWS? aims: - To contribute to the prevention of youth’s political radicalization leading to violent extremism through citizenship education & media literacy promoting positive narratives on social networks.
