The idea for this project originates during the Youth Exchange “Crossing the Chasm”, a project focused on strengthening intercultural understanding between young participants from Portugal and Slovakia. During the project, young participants discussed among each other what topics they would like to explore in the future. They valued the experience during the project, namely being able to get to know other cultures and realizing how they can be active in changing perceptions on multiculturality in their own communities. During a session on creating future project ideas participants Afonso (PT) and Karina (SK) developed the idea of a project focused on using Cinema to foster intercultural understanding. The idea collected unanimous positive feedback from all participants. Some added that it would be good to explore how movies are made and what type of topics and language are used in different countries and try to come up with a unified European cinematic language, creating movies that would resonate with people across Europe. During other projects we re-discussed the idea with partners from Hungary and Serbia, who showed great interest to be an active part of this project. Context: During the last few years, Europe has seen a rise in extremist ideas. The economic crisis of 2008, terrorist attacks in several European countries and the refugee crisis of 2015 have caused discomfort and feelings of insecurity among the populations, a situation that has been used and exploited by populist leaders advocating for division, closed borders and even xenophobia and racism. However, Europe and specially the European Union were built on different values, values of multiculturality, of peace, of unity and solidarity among people of different nationalities, cultures and religions. In the communities where the partners activate, we found one common problem: most people are not exposed to other cultures. Populations are not ethnically diverse, people don’t travel, tourists don’t visit, a scenario where convincing people there’s a boogie man across the border becomes easier. European Cinema has always been a catalyst for change. The stories told by authors like Manoel de Oliveira, Juraj Jakubisko, Bela Tarr or Emir Kusturica, among other influential directors, have the power to inspire us, they make us question prejudices and stereotypes and increase our critical thinking by making us think about social issues in different or new perspectives. That power that Cinema holds as an art form and the way it will be used by the future generations is fundamental to the success of a United and solidary Europe. Goal: Our project aims to raise the intercultural understanding of 48 young participants form PT, SK, HU and RS, by fostering their creative expression through filmmaking. It comprises one YE to take place in Góis, Portugal between 01-10.03.2020. The project includes also 10 group leaders (2 for SK and HU, 3 for PT and RS). Objectives: 1-To raise the levels of intercultural understanding in 48 young participants from PT, SK, HU and RS. 2-Foster the creative expression of the participants through the development of filmmaking competences. 3-Increase critical thinking of the 48 participants and their communities by exposing them to different perspectives. Our objectives are in inline with several objectives of both Erasmus+ Programme and the European Commission by: -“improving the level of key competences and skills of young people (…) to promote participation in democratic life in Europe (…) active citizenship, intercultural dialogue, social inclusion and solidarity, in particular through increased learning mobility opportunities for young people (…)” -increasing sense of initiative and entrepreneurship; -improving foreign language competences; -enhancing intercultural awareness; -fostering a more active participation in society; -increasing awareness of the European project and the EU values; -raising participants' awareness and understanding of other cultures and countries, offering them the opportunity to build networks of international contacts, to actively participate in society and develop a sense of European citizenship and identity; - promoting diversity, intercultural and inter-religious dialogue, common values of freedom, tolerance and respect of human rights as well as enhancing media literacy, critical thinking and sense of initiative of young people.
