Background

The key drivers of Europe have been recognized within the Europe 2020 Strategy to overcome the socio-economic crisis affecting Europe countries, to boost growth and jobs and to foster equity and inclusion. Fighting rising levels of unemployment – particularly among young people- has become one of the most urgent tasks for European governments. Against this background, Erasmus+ is the supportive EU Program in the fields of youth. The Roma people are Europe’s largest ethnic minority. Out of an estimated 10-12 million in total in Europe, some 6 million live in the EU, and most of them hold the citizenship of an EU country. Many Roma in the EU are victims of prejudice and social exclusion, despite the fact that EU countries have banned discrimination. According to the European Commission, accepting of diversity in the public sphere is increasing, but there are still gaps and differences between countries (“Discrimination in the EU in 2012”, Eurobarometer). Entrepreneurship and economic empowerment are the only sustainable way to permanently escape poverty and social exclusion. However, young Roma entrepreneurs are often being discriminated by finance providers, state institutions, business partners and even customers.
