Objectives

One of the burning issues of the present world is spreading disinformation which cripples the real picture of true reality, downplays the seriousness of some urgent global problems, creates social tensions and increases animosity. One of the victims of spreading disinformation are young people. They often do not have enough knowledge to evaluate if the news are true or false, though we must admit that this is very difficult for all individuals as nobody an expert in all subjects. What can and should we do in order to protect young people against the negative impact of disinformation and manipulation? We should help them build their capacities and strengths to make them more resistant to fake news and manipulative intentions of the environment they live in. We should help them recognize the disinformation, hoaxes, fake news by identifying their common traits and specific types of their sources. We should develop their abilities in the area of critical thinking. We should spread awareness about the dangers of disinformation and show its perilous effects. It’s necessary to uncover the false stories and show the true story behind while pointing at the dishonest intentions of the disinformation sources. One of the important actors that should help young people become more resistant to fake news and manipulation are youth workers. They are in direct contact with youth. Helping young people face disinformation and manipulation helps to bolster fake news resistance of also other members of our society. The topic of disinformation have been already one of the workshops of our recent youth exchange called “IVOTEU’19” which was dedicated to European elections in May 2019 and the need to increase the election turnout in chosen countries which had lowest turnouts in the elections in 2014, especially through increasing the participation of young voters in these elections. We could not do an exchange on the elections without doing workshop about disinformation. The disinformation workshop during IVOTEU’19 exchange brought a positive feedback from project’s participants, they showed a vivid interest in this topic. Some of the participants even requested further development of this subject area in the future projects. So the workshop was successful and we have noticed a huge potential of this issue. Urged to return to the issue again and in more detail, we have prepared another youth exchange project dedicated solely to the problem of disinformation, fake news, hoaxes and how to counter them, called “Check fake!” (taking place in August 2019). Creating a training on this subject seemed like a logical and proper finalising of this topic. We have worked directly with young participants in the youth exchanges but to bolster the effect we decided to reach out to youth workers. For this reasons we propose this training named “How to stop infodeformation in YOUth”. Our objectives are: - Discuss the problem of disinformation, fake news and hoaxes - Illustrate the national insights into the issue of fake news, disinformation or propaganda - Learn to identify different forms of manipulation and find the efficient means to confront it - Improve the personal capacities to orient themselves in the huge sea of information and to recognize good quality sources of information - Strengthen the certain competences - ability of critical thinking, including enhancing the abilities to concentrate and understand our emotions which play an important role in communication and news processing; upgrade the competences in argumentation and discussing. - Organize follow-up activities with youth to deliver this knowledge to our target groups
