Objectives

The social inclusion of young people at risk and with special needs was the focus in our project. Our target group; those young people were the ones who had been abandoned, had lost their families or, protected by social services owing to adverse and dangerous conditions. They had individual and social adjustment problems because of deep traumas and social exclusion history. Project partners were organizations working with youth with special needs and in the risk group. The Romanian organization was an official institution met all the needs of those people. The Belgian organization was a non-governmental one that realized all social, individual and legal responsibilities of those young people with the help of state support and voluntary families. Those two organizations had been carrying out joint projects in favor of those young people since 2007. Turkish partner was included in the partnership in 2018 and Bulgarian partner engaged in activities for disadvantaged young people in 2016. These organizations, which prepared those young people for life, carried out successive and being developed projects. This project was a follow-up project of youth exchange in Plovdiv, Bulgaria in 2018. During the main activities, it had been planned together with the participating youth and the preliminary preparations had started. Our project carried specialized and improved project objectives comparing to the previous one. A wide range of social problems were the reason of the situation of young people in the target group. The project partners were facing the problems of those young people and the social reflections of those problems in practice. With that experience, the partner organizations had identified the common problems facing them and before determining our goals, we had made needs analysis. 1. Psychological problems: These young people, who live in streets or are orphanages and have many traumas, have confidence problems against themselves, others and society. They need to acquire roles in the group, create healthy friendships, and develop their individual capacities and self-confidence. 2. Social problems: Young people who do not have equal conditions with their peers can only make friends in their own groups. They have behavior and communication problems within the society due to their background and loneliness. These young people need to participate equally and qualitatively in youth work, to develop social communication and behavior skills, the feeling of belonging to a group and to increase social cohesion. 3. Economic, educational and occupational problems: Most of these young people are the ones who have not been able to start or left formal education for various reasons. Education deficiencies make it difficult for them to find a satisfactory job. Therefore, they have to work in unfavorable conditions or in illegal environments. As a result, they face health problems, legal problems, poverty and unemployment. They should be provided with a common alternative through non-formal and informal learning methods. They should be guided to appropriate business lines by gaining professional qualifications. 4. Environmental problems: There are lack of knowledge and approach about these young people in the society. Without being taken into consideration about their lesser opportunity and disadvantageous backgrounds, they are excluded, marginalized and disregarded because of their lifestyles and behaviors. In society, awareness and positive behavior codes should be established against them. Many of them do not know how to make a start, where to go, what conditions they will be involved in and how they can sustain the process. To enable support for them, there is a need for trained actors and civilian local units which are easily accessible. We also identified some general needs associated with the needs written here. Those included increasing the capacities of CSOs and establishing local collaborations, developing policy recommendations and action plans on a local and national extent, and the need to produce networks and tools to share knowledge and experience in the European dimension. Project objectives had been determined in line with these needs; 1. To contribute to the social inclusion, active citizenship and social harmony of the people in target group, 2. To increase their employment capacity by enhancing their creativity and entrepreneurship, 3. To improve European citizenship and European awareness, 4. To establish qualified civil initiatives, international networks and means to support and direct them, 5. To increase public awareness in favor of them and to influence decision-makers to provide equal opportunities at local and European level. With these goals, we aimed to contribute to the reduction of social problems by increasing the social participation of disadvantaged young people.
