Objectives

Actors for Change (AFC) aimed to bring together and empower young people from the UK and Turkey by engaging them in discussions around social issues, violence in particular; helping them gain skills, knowledge and attitudes to express themselves; and introducing them to Forum Theatre as a participatory art form and as a method of addressing social injustices. Violence in various spheres of life, but especially violence within the education system, was the main but not exclusive topic of the project. The expectation was that participants would apply their learning in their community, particularly disadvantaged young people, as Forum Theatre is also known as the 'theatre of the oppressed' and based on two key convictions – that theatre can and must be a tool for changing the world and that human beings possess theatrical language. AFC’s objectives were to: • Strengthen the practice and culture of participation and inclusion in Europe by sharing values, experiences and good practice to encourage new initiatives • Provide new opportunities for young people • Combat isolation and individualism • Increase awareness in young people of the importance of addressing and eliminating violence and stimulate them in playing a constructive role in the development of their own communities using Forum Theatre as a possible tool • Encourage taking initiative and entrepreneurship to stimulate the ability to start from an idea and end with the creation of a concrete product ie. a performance • Open routes into education, training and employment for young people via transferable skills and confidence gained through organising and participating in theatre events • Foster inclusion by providing the valuable experience of travel and intercultural exchange • Facilitate active participation in Forum Theatre both within the group and the wider public • Provide a cooperative non-formal environment • Strengthen the European dimension of projects and facilitate comparison around youth field issues in Erasmus+ and other EU programmes.
