It was our goal to bring together young diverse idealistic participants and promote an environment where they get inspired and informed about inequalities. We aimed to have a diverse community of different nationalities, social backgrounds, and other identity markers. To empower youth that already holds potential for action and confront them with other living realities was important for us to allow maximum growth. To have an international understanding and to be aware of one’s background and pre-assumptions, as well as possibilities is essential for future change-makers to realize sustainable and inclusive projects. Hand in hand with this perspective, the goal to teach about intersectionality in relation to the core theme of (in)equalities, was added in 2021. We wanted participants to learn about systems of oppression and how they are interconnected. Participants should not only have learned theories and facts about these (in)equalities but acquire a profound understanding of their personal position in these systems. We aimed for participants to comprehend the topics on a personal emotional as well as on structural fact-based level. Participants should learn about gender, social class, sexuality, race, and Ableism, and how these interconnect, also connecting to issues like the climate crisis or the pandemic. We aimed to have an international community to foster intercultural competences as well as global thinking. We want to promote our participants to be active in their local communities. The Youth Exchange should be a place to find knowledge, inspiration, and a global context to issues participants knew of as well as give a platform for young people to share their struggles and passions. In connection with this, it was our goal to explore the local community with the participants during the Youth Exchange. They should learn to understand the cultural structures of the town and the concerns of local people and groups. In this context, it was important to us that participants would be able to explore the nature of the area and connect it to the culture as well as link it to the topic of sustainability. A core objective was for participants to develop a concrete project for their local community after being exposed to the themes and experiences of the Youth Exchange. They should learn how to design a project as well as feel comfortable using the toolkit introduced. Once the facilitation team was completed we decided that participants should also learn how to present their project idea. They should know the key aspects of a pitch and have gained some experience in talking in front of a bigger group. Ideally, participants should bring their project to action in their local community after the end of the Youth Exchange.
