Objectives

The first and most important goal of this youth exchange was to raise awareness for sustainability in general and for a personal sustainable lifestyle in particular in the sense of lifelong learning. To achieve this, it was necessary to explain the term "sustainability" in all its dimensions first and to bring it closer to the young people. In this context, it seemed important to grasp the micro level of one's own highly personal sphere of life with the macro level and the corresponding interactions and to convey this to the participants. The young people were dealing with all areas of sustainable living (economic, ecological and social) systematically and gain possibilities for their own everyday life and lifestyle out of this. This was also linked to the goal that the young people should become multipliers in order to pass on the basic principles of a sustainable lifestyle and its effects on the environment. This youth exchange was consciously linked to the ambitious goal of actively counteracting the approaching climate catastrophe by making the participants aware that changes in personal lifestyle as well as global actions and thinking are absolutely necessary if humanity should not head for a catastrophe of hardly imaginable dimensions. It was important for us that through the encounter of young people networks develop, which on the one hand become effective on a personal level between the young people themselves, and on the other hand also between the participating organisations. A personal encounter between young people from different European countries is an ideal condition for this. Of course, getting to know each other personally also serves to reduce prejudices and modify stereotypes. This can be achieved in particular through the encounter of people from very different cultural backgrounds and the associated personal exchange of opinions, ideas and views. In addition to talk about the topic itself, its content and its possible effects on the personal lifestyle of the participants, the focus was also on strengthening the European "we-identity". Not least because a problem like climate protection requires a joint effort by all, which goes far beyond national borders. Methodologically, access was to be sought primarily through artistic works. In addition to passing on information, facts and theories, the intention was to overcome the cognitive level and to make it possible to pierce into a deeper layer of the personality that also includes the emotional layer. For this purpose, very different techniques, from performance to visual arts to all-encompassing installation, were applied. It is known from scientific research on learning that learning has a deeper and longer-lasting effect when it is also linked to emotional effects. Sustainability is also a political issue. Thus, an invitation to a discussion was sent out to various politicians in advance. The young people should have the opportunity to experience the political dimension at first hand and to enter into a discourse with politicians. In order to open up the economic perspective in particular, an excursion to one of the world's largest steelworks in Linz was planned and organised. This included a guided tour of the VOEST Steel Worlds as well as a factory tour. The aim of this excursion was to sharpen the view that a complete change of life is hardly realistically achievable, but that, especially with regard to industry, the possibilities are still far from exhausted. In addition, cross-connections between industry and one's own decisions on action and consumption were to be established.
