The project "Real or Fake - Time to AwakE+" ("AwakE+") was prepared and implemented based on data and their analysis on the increased use of the Internet, social media especially among young people aged 16-24 (3 hours per day on average), which also leads to their inevitable encounter with a large number of risky websites and online problems such as fake news or spam messages. Alarming tendencies were also reported regarding the data on the frequency of exposure to fake news (at least once a week) and the large percentage of Europeans (83%) who believe that the fake news are a threat to democracy. Young and new users are often confused about what they can trust or not. Due to this fact, the partner organizations from Bulgaria, Turkey, Spain, Serbia, Germany and the United Kingdom, based on the need to develop skills and knowledge for safe surfing in Internet and protection from the impact of fake news, implemented a youth exchange, the main goal of which was to inform young people about media and online risks; to increase their media literacy and teach them to recognize better which sources are reliable and which are propaganda, fake news and fraud. Through the project, we encouraged their skills related to critical thinking and cautiousness in media environment. In this regard, our specific tasks were to help the participants: • To become familiar with the media in other countries, their differences and similarities with what they use in their homeland. • To understand the phenomenon of fake news and the new risks that people face on the Internet. • Recognize fake news, scams and propaganda online. • To analyse and verify the authenticity of the emails, news and websites they read. • To stimulate their critical thinking. • To acquire and exchange experience on the subject. The youth exchange "Real or Fake - Time to AwakE+" also directly corresponded to one of the focuses of the Erasmus+ Programme for 2019, namely youth mobility projects increasing media literacy, critical thinking and initiative of young people. In this regard, the aim and tasks of the project responded to the identified needs in this direction, supporting young people to acquire skills and knowledge necessary for their safety and self-orientation in the media and Internet environment.
