Objectives

Immaterial heritage comprises of several elements, like monuments and collections of objects, traditions or living expressions inherited from our ancestors and passed on to our descendants such as performing arts, social practices, rituals, festive events, knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe or the knowledge and skills to produce traditional crafts. Following the European Year of Cultural Heritage in 2018 and the eternal responsibility of the societies to ensure the preservation of their heritage, the European institutions encourage more people to discover and engage with Europe's cultural heritage and reinforce a sense of belonging to a common European space. An understanding of the cultural heritage of different communities helps build intercultural dialogue and encourages mutual respect for other ways and patterns of living. Having this as the main driver, we created e a connection between the preservation of immaterial heritage engaging young people as main actors to boost social entrepreneurship and possibilities within the sustainable development sector to mirror and protect this valuable treasure. We want to exhibit and gather knowledge around the opportunities presented around the exploitation of areas of high cultural importance and rural areas, in a way that it will be viable to bring people back to their roots in order to bounce back to the nonurbanistic life and create opportunities in sectors that might be considered as non-attractive nowadays. This action was presented as a gateway for people wanting to experience a different way of living, combining modern luxuries with tradition. From then on, the clear choice for this project was a Training Course to provide some simple steps and training sessions that would present compelling real-life experiences and learning moments revolving around Immaterial Heritage Preservation, Social Entrepreneurship, and Self Employment. We noticed a great potential to bridge traditions, culture, social activities with the new possibilities that digital communication and collaborative economies offer to provide means for youth and social organizations through their activities to build a responsible and sustainable economy, having in mind the uniquenesses of small markets, on a different awareness basis of authenticity and value of local communities. That’s why is clear how this project will particularly be linked to the objectives of the Erasmus+ programme and the European policy agenda for growth, jobs, equity, and social inclusion. It tackles the aforementioned socio-economic challenges and opportunities, namely fighting high levels of unemployment, enhancing the sense of belonging to a community and fostering intercultural understanding and preservation of heritage. The project specifically responded to these key action aims: 1) Gives priority to young people, enhancing their entrepreneurial skills, digital literacy, and critical thinking 2) Equips with training tools the youth workers, acquiring them with socio-economic integrating/facilitating tools in order to transfer the common core values of society and integration in local communities 3) Promotes common values of freedom and ecology through the development of tolerance and respect of human rights, gender, culture, and ecological diversity through dialogue 4) Promotes diversity, intercultural dialogue & understanding, and culture & heritage appreciation and consciousness. The whole content is built around authentic experiences based on community relationships and different tools and techniques so they can become future coaches/facilitators/disseminators and agents of change in their own communities. The learning process anchored participants needs-passions-skills, digital technologies, and cultural & natural heritage & potential versus present and future income-generating trends using a hackathon approach that could be replicable for other countries while engagement is encompassed through entrepreneurial and non-formal education methodologies to nurture social capital and active citizenship with youth. The activity took place in the picturesque village of Lefkara, in the Larnaca region. The selection of this location was targetted to provide participants with the fundamental sense of motive and creativity since Lefkara would be a vivid, lively example of rich immaterial heritage, culture, and tradition, a factor that is bonded strongly to the objectives of the project. Participants had a first-handed experience in the sector of immaterial heritage and are expected to embrace the authenticity and identity of the place to enhance their sense of cultural appreciation, gather information around topics of interest that concern the village and through the project they will try to address them along with the guidance of the facilitators and local stakeholders, in a controlled environment using mostly methods of Non Formal Education and Informal Learning.
