In the flow was a project for people active in youth work with a focus on social inclusion. Our purpose was to give participants space to explore, experience, and acquire embodied (somatic) approaches and tools in order to support their target groups and bring their learnings into their own context. Through our networks, we got connected with the partner organizations and their youth workers that are working with youngsters with fewer opportunities. Out of our conversations and a short questionnaire that we created, we concluded that the challenges that our youth workers face every day from a wider international perspective resemble one another. They are confronted to reach out to these youngsters, keep them motivated and interested by creating engaging activities. Hand to hand with this, they are missing the space to advance their professional and personal skills in order to be more impactful in their youth work. We have created a problem tree and analyzed the causes of this. Our youth workers: 1. Don’t use consciously the somatic approaches in order to support their personal and professional development 2. Don’t renew their methods when it comes to reaching out to young people, especially those with fewer opportunities, and even if they do, they: 3. Don’t receive enough support to apply the newly acquired methodology into practical youth projects at a local level. 4. Don’t have space to exchange or develop good practices in a network of professionals facing similar challenges. Therefore we created the In the Flow project with the aim to empower these youth workers and train them in the embodiment as an innovative approach to foster social inclusion in the work with their target groups. This we reached through our main objectives designed for 30 youth workers from 9 countries: - To become familiar with embodiment and bring variety in their working style; - To create local activities based on the newly acquired approach combined with the ones they already use; - To exchange and develop their methods and toolkit for social inclusion of fewer opportunities for youngsters on the local level. We created different learning processes, founded on the principles of - among others - body awareness and expression, embodied coaching, and theatre. The activities were based on non-formal and experiential learning methodologies with a strong participant-centered approach. Embodiment focus on body-based processes that allow deeper self-awareness, expression, and reflection beyond the words. We believe that embodied approach and learning tools are inclusive because they stimulate learning for everyone and embrace diversity. They are basic, simple, creative, universally understandable, and work for everybody beyond any limitation of age, disability, education level, race. The project had 3 main phases: • A Preparation - local. • Training Course - international. • The implementation phase and online support - local. In the training course, the youth workers had space to exchange their own method, acquire embodied approach and tools, combine it with embodiment and practice it by creating workshops for each other. During the implementation phase participants were working in the national groups or separately and created activities for their local communities using the elements of embodiment in their own method. Some of the methods and tools created in this Project were collected in the form of a Booklet and shared in our networks in order to achieve the long-term sustainability of the results.
