Ecology became pretty popular among young people. Many of them got inspired by movement of Greta Thunberg. They have started to take part in protests Fridays for Future - in the last event participated thousands of people from more than 150 countries. In Czech Republic the protest took place in 21 cities, in Slovakia it was in 4 venues. It proved big motivation of young people to carry out actions which will contribute to protection of the environment and stopping climate change. Furthermore, this topic is present in different media so it became common subject of discussions, not only in public but also in private space. In some aspects, this movement among youth started to be also controversial. We, as a youth workers and pedagogues, saw this strong trend and its importance for our target groups so we did not want to stay indifferent for this. We see environment protection as an important issue. We wanted to support young people in actions against climate change but we wanted them also to keep thinking critically, be educated in this field and use their motivation and energy in a way which can be useful for environment and communities. Unfortunately, we saw that many times interest in ecology is shallow. Young people spoke about ecology but they did not have deep knowledge of the topic. They made some small steps, actions but often they were lost and confused, they just followed general trends. Another aspect was acting environmental-friendly in daily life. On the posters from protests we could see appeals for adults and big companies to stop destroying Earth. We did see importance of this but we also thought it was meaningful to start changes from yourself. In our experience with youth we often miss this part - their daily habits do not go together with idea of sustainable lifestyle. This was one of the features we wanted to work on with teenagers. As mentioned before, as youth workers we wanted to support initiatives of young people but we needed to be properly prepared for that. This was the reason we had decided to carry out project: Ecology - from trend to education. The issues we wanted to address by the project were: - lack of professional knowledge of youth workers and youth on environmental topics - lack of modern and interesting methods for environmental education of youth - big interest of youngsters in ecology - need of young people to be active in society and to start ecological changes - increasing problems related with natural environment, climate change Our objectives were: - to educate youth workers on environmental topics so they can give good support to youth - to develop new tools of youth work useful for environmental education of young people - to encourage people, specially youth, to change their daily habits into more ecological behaviours - to enhance motivation of youngsters to be active in society, to give them tools needed for it - to raise up awareness on climate change, promote ecological lifestyle and "green" attitude - feeling responsible for nature
