One of the main topics we covered with this project is related to rural development. There is a growing concern worldwide that young people have distance themselves from agriculture and thus engaging youth in agriculture has been moved to the top on the development agenda,. In rural areas where agriculture is likely to provide the main source of income the number of young people rapidly decreases. Currently around the world we’re living in an era where rapid urbanization has led to a decline in rural populations and for the first time ever the majority of the world’s population lives in a city. The main aim of the project was to motivate young unemployed people to stay in villages and start generating income through agribusiness. Participants took part in various workshop that allowed them to broaden their knowledge about rural development, agriculture, sustainable development, how to develop agribusiness and where to search for support for their business. Also participants had a chance to interact with local farmers, exchange good practice with them; experience rural life and learned how to make a small business. The plan was also to produce local farmers products and sell them on local market which generated income was planned to be donated. The main objectives of the project were: - To engage unemployed young farmers or future farmers in a project about agriculture development and provide them space to discuss rural development in general, agriculture & food production, exchange best practice and identify opportunities for growth of our own villages/ communities/ areas; - To train young farmers & give them skills and motivation to create job opportunities for themselves in agriculture sector by increasing their knowledge on how to become self-employed farmers; to enable them to develop their own viable agribusinesses for increase of agriculture production in their own communities and at the same time train them how to face with the wide range of socio– economic issues; - To work on development of at least 6 pilot agribusiness plans and to train youth in processing, marketing and consultancy in various areas of agricultural production; - To allow youth coming from rural areas meet each other, learn about cultures and through this promote European Diversity; - To teach youngsters on how making traditional food using agricultural products can be developed as a business (the youngsters was planned to produce final agricultural product and place the product on the Tetovo market, thus to learn how income can be generated through this kind of food production). Through non-formal methods of learning, case studies, discussion and simulation games, learning by doing (visit to local farms and fields), practical work in the fields, and practical production of food, the plan was the participants to be motivated to seek up for opportunities for themselves in rural areas where they live. We have identified many challenges ahead for this sector but if young people are offered education in agriculture, a voice at policy level, & in the media, & are engaged with innovations then the agriculture industry can attract youth again.
