Objectives

The multilateral youth exchange "SO YES! 2022" aimed at an intercultural exchange and the promotion of intercultural competences and non-formal learning among the participants. Thus, the participants' awareness and understanding of other countries, cultures and of Europe should be enhanced and active EU citizenship should be strengthened. This includes getting to know different European cultures with the aim of reducing prejudices, religious segregation and fears, so that mutual understanding is promoted. The participants learn about intercultural similarities and peculiarities and understand the differences. Furthermore, the project pursues international networking, the strengthening of social commitment as well as the strengthening of international cooperation and exchange between the different Samaritan groups. In this way, the project was intended to enable participants to look beyond their own culture, to explore a new country, and to promote opportunities to get involved there and to orient themselves professionally. In terms of content, the thematic focus on "Media in the Context of Democracy" aimed to address the fundamental values of freedom of the press, integration in the EU, and intercultural occurrences. For this purpose, dialogues were to be initiated between decision-makers at the political level and young people, thus opening up access to political participation. Furthermore, media competence and critical thinking among young people were to be promoted: the focus was on dealing with (new) media and their effects on society and each individual. Following the guiding theme "Media in the Context of Democracy", an intensive examination of media topics such as fake news, disinformation and propaganda on the Internet was initiated, with the aim of raising awareness of and understanding the situation with regard to the topic in one's own country and in Europe. This includes learning various basic media concepts, recognizing the differences between fake news and disinformation, and developing ways to influence public opinion, promote media literacy, and respect of democratic principles. The participants were supposed to gain in-depth knowledge about their own media use and that of other individuals and groups in a European comparison, learn about the benefits and dangers, and be empowered to actively use social networks to represent their own point of view. Furthermore, the aim was for the participants to be able to place these insights in the broader context of democratic coexistence. With the help oh the project, the participants learned to appreciate the cultural alignments of the participating countries and understand the existing differences. By working on sub-topics in internationally mixed thematic groups, the aim was to learn about the significance of media in the corresponding thematic field, to identify challenges and ultimately to develop and identify possible approaches to solutions. The following topics were dealt with in internationally mixed groups: 1. How can press be controlled without endangering democracy and freedom of press? 2. How are the (new) media used for anti-democratic processes? 3. What measures are needed to prevent cyberbullying,-bullying and -crime? 4. Use of social media in non-profit organizations The participants dealt intensively with the following topics and developed their own, well-founded perspective on them. In these topic areas, the participants had to identify challenges and ultimately develop possible solutions and their own, well-founded perspective on them. The measures pursued were successfully implemented.
