Objectives

The main objective of the project ""I am time" - What memories does culture contain?" is to bring together young adults from Germany and Russia 30 years after the Peaceful Revolution to encourage a dialogue on the political events of that time. The project aims to draw attention to the different perceptions of the Peaceful Revolution and the accompanying social changes to contribute understanding between the participating countries. The participants will exchange views on historical key moments in their own countries. One of these key moments could be for instance the fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany or the first free elections in Russia. The participants debate on historial key moments is supported by workshops, excursions and visits to memorial places and museums, as well as expert discussions. But also personal experiences or participant's family histories can make these "abstract constructs" of politics and history tangible for every single participant. Possible discussion questions could be: How do parents, relatives or acquaintances tell about the Peaceful Revolution (German: Die Wende) and the "Post-Change" period (German: Nachwendezeit)? Which own childhood memories do the participants have? How do these social events shape the participants own biography? And where do exist similarities or differences of the younger generation in both countries? With such discussion questions the organizers would like to stimulate a critical engagement with the topic "own identity". The study of historical events and personal experiences should promote the intercultural and social competence of the participants and create understanding for different opinions and perspectives. With the help of various methods, such as excursions and discussions with contemporary witnessess, the Peaceful Revolution, reunification and "Post-Change" period will be discussed from different perspectives. The participants' own reflections on the subject as well as editorially produced content should ultimately be published in a podcast. In this way, the Youth Exchange has a long-term goal of encouraging civil society dialogue beyond the project. In the face of seemingly increasingly diverging East and West, Russia and the EU, it is necessary, through different personal views, to create more understanding for each other and thus to overcome borders and to promote sustainable rapprochement of the countries.
