Objectives

The recent development in most European countries concerning LGBT rights and discourses shows on one hand that doors are opening for change, like the legalisation of same sex marriage in various countries, like recently in Germany. In the same time, there are still big resentments and conservative force against sexual diversity, e.g. major protests in Italy against same sex marriage; Italy is one of the last western countries that reject same sex marriage and child adoption for homosexual couples. Even ministers, e.g. former minister for foreign affairs, Angelino Alfano or environmental minister Gian Luca Galetti showed their protest publicly against same sex marriage. In the German region Baden Württemberg a petition tried to avoid the implementation of sexual diversity and sexual diverse families in school books. Especially the conservative part of the CDU and the right populist party AFD strongly supported this initiative. In Hungary and Slovakia there is currently a big backlash regarding the development of equal human rights for LGBT people and sadly, discrimination is even increasing. The conservative right wing populist government of Victor Orban in Hungary, the conservative and right wing coalition in Slovakia are threatening European democratic values and equal human rights. The same applies for the former right wing conservative and populist government of "Lega Nord" and "Movimento Cinque Stelle" in Italy, which increased discrimination tendencies within the italian society and even caused harmful situations for LGBT individuals. Also in Greece the right wing party Anel was part of the government and sadly had a negative and disrespective impact on the Greek society. For those conservative and right wing politics, being gay or lesbian is still considered as something “abnormal”. In Slovakia subsidies for LGBT organisations were even cut completely in 2017, which caused that our former partner "Queer Leaders Forum" from Bratislava cannot to keep our cooperation alive. These examples show that many societies within the EU are still far from sexual freedom and equal rights for its inhabitants. Still there is pressure on young people to stay within heterosexual gender conformity zones, coming from peers, society and media. Hence, young LGBT people still struggle against the worst of traditions and cultures, many LGBT teenagers are even forced to leave their family homes, because their parents ban them. Three young LGBT activists/ voluntary youth workers from Italy and Greece should join our professional LGBT youth work at svls for 3 weeks from 05.10. – 25.10.2020, that was the orignial lan Finally all three activists came from Greece (as the 2 Italians finally had to cancel) in the period 08.-29.11.2022.
