Objectives

The youth exchange dealt with the topics of tolerance, participation and sustainability and how these are connected with each other, or should be connected with each other, and all of which contribute to making a society more sustainable and just. The aim of the youth exchange was to network and educate young people from Serbia, Ukraine and Germany who are involved in voluntary work in these three areas at home, and to offer them a platform through the youth exchange on which they could develop project ideas together. The aim was to bring together participants who have been involved in different areas up to now, but who all have the goal of making our society more humane and sustainable. During the youth exchange, the participants developed projects which they then implemented in their communities in order to make a practical contribution to a more tolerant, democratic/participative and sustainable society and to think about and bring together all three topics. The project aimed to provide participants with skills that would enable them to engage in society more effectively, more successfully and therefore more enjoyably. The aim was for organisations and youth initiatives that have so far concentrated on a specific topic (e.g. sustainability) to open up to other important social topics and to network, especially at regional level, with other organisations that are active in the other selected areas (tolerance, participation). This should convey, in the spirit of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, that ultimately all social issues and problems are interconnected and must also be solved together. To illustrate that positive social change is always possible, the youth exchange was held under the motto "Learning from the Past for Tolerance, Sustainability and Participation". Accordingly, a location was chosen for the youth exchange that symbolises precisely this. The theme is also reflected in the programme. The youth meeting took place on the grounds of a permaculture project that belongs to the sustainable community project "Lebensgarten", which 40 years ago took over and transformed a vacant house complex that was part of a forced labour camp during the Nazi era and served in particular to house the guards and SS men. The aim of the initiators of the Lebensgarten was to transform a place with a terrible and inhumane history into a positive place. The place symbolises that changes for the better are possible. We also wanted to work on this together and draw strength for our own commitment from the history of this place. In addition to dealing with the history of the place where the youth exchange took place, the focus was on the three topics of sustainability, tolerance and participation, including an intensive exchange on these topics from the perspective of the participants from Ukraine, Serbia and Germany, the teaching of methodological skills for project work and the joint planning of concrete projects that were then to be implemented at home in their own environment.
