Objectives

The Schengen area is considered one of the most successful and popular achievements of European integration. Hundreds of millions of Europeans benefit every day, directly or indirectly, from open internal borders and the European single market. Millions of people cross internal borders every day to work, shop or travel in other countries. In recent years, the idea of open internal borders has come under massive criticism. This is the right moment to pause and reflect on the history and achievements of European integration, and the EU in particular, and to create visions for a European future. For young people, European integration is part of everyday life, they rarely question it and have a fundamentally positive attitude towards it. According to the "Junges Europa 2019" study by the TUI Foundation, approval of the EU among young people has grown steadily over the last years. Young people want deeper integration, but consider it unlikely and do not feel sufficiently represented by the European Parliament. It is important to develop new visions for the future of European integration and to fill them with life again. Young people will have a special role to play in this. This project will help to promote democratic debate and intercultural dialogue by experiencing, getting to know and questioning other views and values. The project should actively strengthen the European consciousness of the participants by highlighting a socially relevant topic from the perspective of a united Europe as well as from the perspective of individual member states. At the same time, it should promote intercultural, social and action-oriented competences of the participants through its encounter-characteristics. Young people will be guided in their cooperation and networking with each other and familiarised with European integration and mobility through practical approaches. At the same time, the project promotes the dissemination of peer learning among partner organisations and participants through its non-formal educational approaches. This project will bring together partners from school and extracurricular education and strengthen existing partnerships. The people involved in the partner institutions will have the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge about non-formal learning and teaching methods together and from each other. Through scholar-extra-scholar-cooperation, new educational paths can be taken and deepened. Schools are often not able to provide comprehensive information and sensitization, but can usually only address individual subject areas. Topics are not addressed enough and cross-references, background information and options for action are too rarely pointed out. This is where non-formal education can start and supplement schools with awareness-raising approaches.
