Objectives

The youth exchange "From Stereotypes to Prejudice" exists since 2019 and was born from the partnership of Pangera e.V. and Une Terre Culturelle with the Association of Social Workers in Diyarbakir. The project was to take place in three phases between 2019 and 2020. Participants met in Izmir/Dyarbakir for the exchange phase in Turkey and in Marseille for the phase in France. Unfortunately, we were interrupted by the health crisis related to Covid. Therefore, the phase we organized in April 2022 was the first opportunity for the participants to meet. However, on the French and German side, the groups have evolved a lot. We therefore entered into new partnerships to re-form the groups. For example, we recruited most of the French participants through the Institut Régional du Travail Social (IRTS) in Marseille. On the German side, we met with the social workers of one of the contact points of the social workers' association Outreach. The Clara Outreach Center in Wedding thus brought together a group of five young women, which we supplemented with three freely recruited people. The whole group thus consisted of 8 Kurdish young women, 8 French and 9 German young women. The organized activities alternated between thematic visits, creative workshops, language animations and debates and discussion times around the theme of "women empowerment" and gender issues. This theme allowed for an exchange on the situation of women in the three countries and at the same time built strong relationships between the participants. The dynamics of the exchange were very benevolent, and the chosen non-mixing of the group allowed for a safe and empowering space for the young women. Friendships were made and all participants expressed a desire to participate in a next phase in France or Turkey. Each was able to use her talents and creativity. The intercultural exchanges and activities made it possible to discover both the traditions of each country (such as traditional Kurdish music) and to raise awareness of the situation of women in each country. The groups were very diverse and each had the opportunity to talk with young women whose daily lives are very different from their own.
