Much of our life and work takes place in online environments and there is a big shift towards digital youth work. We felt that our organisation and its network of partners have some important expertise in relevant topics and wanted to pass this knowledge to more youth workers. The youth workers from involved organisations had brought out lack of knowledge about online safety topics as one key reason that is discouraging them from implementing more digital activities into their work with youth. With more digitalization come additional risks that have to be taken into consideration when carrying out youth work activities. Furthermore, youth workers play an important role in shaping the way young people understand potential risks. Our goal was to make the online space safer for young people who are engaged in the organisations' activities and increase the relevant competencies of youth workers. Our objectives were the following: Increase the awareness of youth workers about online safety Equip youth workers with useful tools and skills to manage digital youth work Enable youth workers to share their knowledge and experiences about online safety with the young people that they work within their local communities and on international projects Help youth workers connect with each other and exchange ideas, experiences and knowledge to promote international cooperation We also wanted to gain more experience ourselves and carry out a good training course that would benefit youth workers and young people alike. It was important for us to gain additional experience when facilitating a training with our partners and become better at creating new useful training opportunities for youth workers. On the grand scale, we want to contribute towards safer online environments and increase people’s ability to spot dangers and counter them. This is why we developed this sort of online safety crash course and linked it with the current needs of youth workers.
