Objectives

With the DISCOVER project we wanted to ensure that all the young people who have participated in our program of activities could visit different regions of Europe, contrasting the Atlantic and Mediterranean cultures. We wanted to contribute, at the same time, to break down the barriers that prevent the mobility of young people with fewer opportunities, in particular, due to intellectual disabilities. We seek to promote and increase the skills to improve the personal autonomy of people with intellectual diversity, and it has been very exciting for us to see how some of our participants took a plane for the first time, and participated in the organization of an international trip. In this way, one of our main objectives has been to create an inclusive youth exchange, without barriers due to lack of opportunities. For this reason, we have managed to get thirteen participants with fewer opportunities, with the help of facilitators, to participate in the exchanges. An exchange of this type was very important to us, to create a space of trust for our participants, where everyone could express themselves, taking into account the language barrier. Facilitators and team leaders were proficient in multiple languages and facilitated communication. We also wanted to achieve the creation of new personal relationships, a networking space between young people from different places, promoting the European values of freedom, tolerance and respect, as well as creating a feeling of belonging to Europe. So, we have tried to get all our participants to know a little about all the cultural heritage that the European Union has, to transmit knowledge of the Byzantine culture or the "castrexa" culture (sometimes also called Celtic). Another of our objectives was to improve the self-esteem of people with fewer opportunities by providing them with active participation activities and the possibility of leading some of the scheduled activities. In addition, develop the personal autonomy of the participants through the care of the environment. On the other hand, being in Xacobeo year we wanted to place special emphasis on the promotion of the Camino de Santiago. And finally, also promote citizen participation through volunteering.
