Objectives

Music is a concept that is present in all cultures and social groups, regardless of their ethnic characteristics, preferences, tastes or age. It is used as a ludic and recreational element but, at the same time, as a form of education in all areas of people's development. Thanks to music, not only is it possible to gain knowledge of others, from the application of values such as respect, solidarity or empathy, but it is also possible to gain access to an introspection that helps to improve metacognition based on one's own interests and motivations. That is why music, beyond belonging to the field of formal education, can be understood as an educational line in itself based on an active methodology that uses non-formal education as a key tool to access the knowledge or skills that are intended to be acquired with its use. We are in a time of telecommunications boom in which music has acquired a privileged role, being combined with any information that is intended to be shared. That is why we believe that it is essential to be aware of the power of this part of the messages, both when transmitting and verifying what is received. From ASPAYM Castilla y León, we consider that music is a very special way of attracting young people, since it helps them to relate to each other, share ideas and tastes. At this point, young people with disabilities, who may have greater difficulties in their daily lives to establish social relationships, are especially relevant. Thus, music will be used as a link between them, helping to stimulate their thinking and pro-social skills, to resolve conflicts using verbal and non-verbal language and, ultimately, to take advantage of non-conventional language skills to learn about their own relationship skills and self-knowledge. The project "Music as an inclusive language - training for youth workers" aimed to promote the inclusion of groups of young people with fewer opportunities, especially those with disabilities or at risk of exclusion, through the knowledge and use of music from different perspectives. Through the use of this tool, not only those areas in which each participant has more capabilities or interest in them would be identified, but also social skills would be enhanced to promote inclusion in each target group. Always based on formal methodological principles, a way of working adapted to the changing reality of each environment would be used. In it, youth workers and educators would acquire the ways to adapt to different situations. The objective of the project focused on providing youth workers, leaders and trainers with a new vision on the use of music and all those resources that are linked to it in order to promote inclusion among young people, especially those with fewer opportunities. The specific objectives were: to enhance the social skills of youth; to internalize and comply with the rules of coexistence; to communicate in an appropriate and varied way; to establish interpersonal relationships among youth of different European nationalities; to create and use different skills for decision making; to develop verbal and preverbal expression and comprehension; to favor musical expression and understanding of others' messages; to stimulate the ability to communicate in different situations using music; to promote music as a valuable cultural aspect. The initiative was framed within the priorities of the Erasmus+ program, such as the inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities, especially those with disabilities. It also shared priorities of European dimension, since thanks to the participation of different partners it will favor the approach to the different realities that may exist in the countries, such as the socio-economic environment. For the development of the project, the strategy of inclusion and diversity was taken into account, such as empathizing with the diversity derived from different personal casuistry and different disabilities.
