Objectives

"Less Use, More Re-Use" was a Youth Exchange created as a response to the increasingly concerning impacts of climate change. The Youth Council of Valencia aimed to draw attention to the global climatic situation and the power of human beings on the planet as a key element in making a difference. The project's objectives included making participants reflect on the importance of developing new behaviors towards the environment as the main action to minimize the climate change impact, with a special focus on recycling and the creative re-use of plastic to give it a new life. The project had several general objectives, such as promoting a positive image of young participants through their involvement in collaborative projects, giving entrepreneurial inputs to new economic sectors in the field of global environmental protection and arts, fostering equity and active citizenship, improving young participants' creative, organizational and numerical skills, and enabling them to acquire eco-skills while becoming actors to sensitize others around them. The project aimed to enhance European cooperation among more countries and create a social action in the city of Valencia through the organization of a festival event. The project focused on several main topics, including the impact of our lifestyle on the natural environment and vice versa, energy, water and nature, food, vitality, sustainability, circular economy and green technology. The project aimed to promote the acquisition of skills and greater awareness of the environmental impact of our actions and the importance of recycling in supporting a new economy in favor of the planet. During the project, the participants were also informed about the European strategy on plastics adopted in January 2018. The European Commission stated that over 25 million tons of plastic are thrown in the world, mainly polluting seas and beaches. Micro-plastics in air, packaged food and detergents also pollute water and harm the human body, with health impacts that are not yet fully known. The aim of the fight against plastic is to ensure that by 2030, plastics introduced into the EU market will be completely recyclable (EUROPA.EU, "Residuos plásticos: una estrategia europea para proteger el planeta, defender a los ciudadanos y capacitar a las industrias", 2018). The main aim of the project was to contribute to achieving this ambitious goal.
