Objectives

Erasmus Heritage Volunteers and Leaders II was submitted by REMPART and 15 European partners (12 countries). It was initially planned to take place in France, from January 1, 2020, to December 30, 2021, on 10 heritage sites part of REMPART, Union of associations of popular education for heritage safeguarding. This project was conceived to respond to the shared observation that heritage is often perceived as a domain belonging to experts, which creates a distance between citizens and those who protect it. The objective of this project was to demonstrate that, on the contrary, heritage is everyone's business and that everyone should have access to it. This project is a follow-up to our Erasmus Heritage Volunteers and Leaders I, which REMPART and its partners initiated in 2018, to address the same issue. This first project was made possible thanks to the impulse given by the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018. Our second project aims to continue to facilitate mobility towards heritage, which is a structuring support for exchanges and Europe. In 2020 and 2021, the action was expected to involve 260 young Europeans and youth workers through eight youth exchanges, one planning visit, one training course, and two seminars. Each exchange was to involve three to four national groups and take place on a site run by a REMPART association. Each activity of the Erasmus Heritage Volunteers and Leaders II project was designed around technical workshops contributing to the preservation of the hosting site and to collective exchanges around heritage and culture, through practical activities, site visits, collective life and dedicated time. The exchanges aimed to offer the participants a privileged contact with heritage and an experience of sharing: the project was conceived so that young people, whatever their background, could concretely experience the commitment, the living together and their European citizenship, and discover the European heritage, its history and its trades. Erasmus Heritage Volunteers and Leaders II is a European project of popular education, inclusive, where everyone will have a role to play for heritage. This project was also meant to enable our 16 organisations to consolidate our leadership capacities thanks to a training course and to strengthen our emerging network of partners active both in the fields of youth and volunteering and in the field of cultural heritage.
