Objectives

The European orchestra of young high school students of the New Aquitaine Region has been in existence for 11 years. It is made up of around fifty young people from New Aquitaine and young musicians from regions twinned with the Region. Every year, thousands of young French high school students come to applaud this orchestra during the New High School Festival. A conductor and professional musicians accompany them in their learning. Informal methods are emphasised to encourage an intergenerational exchange based on music. In 2018 and 2019 the orchestra received a grant under the Erasmus+ Youth and Sport programme (YEO 2017-3-FR02-KA105-013801 & MYEO 2019-1-FR02-KA105-015957). This grant supported the mobility of young Europeans to New Aquitaine and expanded the orchestra to include high school students from all over the region. The YEO and MYEO projects have strengthened all the partners: local authorities, high schools, Maison de l'Europe, concert halls and music schools. This base wished to renew the project with the will to go to a higher stage: to involve more the young participants in the organization of the orchestra so that they become more active and more decision-makers of their mobility. In meetings between YEO and MYEO partners, the partners raised the challenges faced by the young people they accompany and the reasons why they consider this project important: - Supporting the development of competences by integrating mobility, foreign language practice and intercultural encounter in their pathway - To bring together the conditions for artistic creation made by young people and for young people on an international scale - To encourage the participation of young people in the conduct of this project by supporting their sense of initiative and enterprise by entrusting them with missions and responsibilities - To give a new dimension to the orchestra through a crowdfunding campaign. During the MYEO project, the young people and partners discovered how to conduct a crowdfunding campaign with the New Aquitaine platform jadopteunprojet.com. - Carrying out a large-scale project to raise awareness among local authorities and political representatives about the importance of informal education in the field of music Music and collaborative work between young people and adults are the medium for this exchange of young people from 5 different countries. Teenagers love music. It is a language in its own right. The young people were asked to create, work on and perform several pieces of music by the group Buena Vista Social Club in front of their peers and the educational and political community. The collective production of a concert and its broadcasting in front of other young people made Europe concrete and modern. This sharing was thus able to embody mobility and interculturality for many young adolescents. For us, the organisations that support these young people, this sharing was a relevant support for organising an exchange of young people, because the musical production made it possible to develop an appetite for languages and exchanges, to make the initiatives of young people known to our leaders and to promote informal education in the musical field. According to the INJEP, young people have transformed the meaning given to work. It is "associated with a potential for self-fulfilment or self-fulfilment by enabling them to carry out interesting tasks or to take initiatives". 96% of young people leaving the education system in 2012-2013 stated in 2016 that autonomy and taking initiative are important or very important in a profession. The MYA (Music Youth Ambassadors) project has given young people a concrete place in decision-making. A young ambassador, representing his or her delegation, was chosen collectively. Participatory methods were used to foster a horizontal relationship. The young people were fully involved and developed skills such as languages, open-mindedness, adaptability, stress management in an intercultural context, entrepreneurship and initiative. They had in their hands a concrete project through which they discovered certain professions and/or developed skills for their future professional life: project management, communication, cooperative work... Through their active participation in the project, the young people showed the values they hold dear. A collaborative effort promoting intergenerational sharing of knowledge, know-how and interpersonal skills was put in place.
