Objectives

Sail Training Ireland and M.A.S.T partnered for four actions under the Erasmus+ programme, two youth exchanges - one 14yrs to 17yrs one 18yrs to 30yrs & two mobility of youth workers. Involving a total of 96 participants (56 young people, 20 youth leaders and 20 Buddies/SNAs). Recruitment this year proved difficult with us coming out of the pandemic, there was a lot of anxiety around coming together in close confines also employers would not release participants due to staff shortages on top of that some cancelled due to contracting Covid. Of the 96 potential participants we had a total of young people 45 participate with an additional twelve participating in the mobility of youth workers. Only one mobility of youth workers took place this was the Youth leader/mentor training weekend for 18+yrs. Initially there were twenty-two applicants four cancelled due to work commitments and the impact of Covid 19. Six contracted Covid 19 in the week leading up to the course start date. Twelve participated in the youth leader/mentor training weekend. The purpose of these exchanges was the development of Skills, Knowledge and Attitudes for Employability, Inclusion and diversity, active citizenship and lifelong learning of the participants and the personal and professional development of the youth leaders. The two Youth Exchange voyages ran consecutively on the Tall Ship Pelican of London between the dates 30th May - 12th June 2022. The duration of each voyage was seven days. Competencies and skills acquired that are transferable to their personal lives and future employability of the participants. Participants also developed the technical-skills necessary to sail a tall ship. The participants assumed various roles throughout the voyage as part of the watch system learning and developing valuable skills along the way. Skills developed were leadership, communication, assertiveness, observation, delegation, listening, teamwork, interpersonal, decision making, time management, positive work ethic, organisational, planning, literacy & numeracy, data entry, analytical, and budgeting skills. This was reinforced as they worked their way through the various roles undertaken. Participants ranged is age from 14yrs to 30yrs, this year saw a lot more participants presenting with mental health issues, social isolation, social anxiety disorder and autism.
