Objectives

The partners were motivated by the issue of young peopl eand alcohol and the need for youth activists to engage with this issue. The harmful use of alcohol is considered to be one of the main risk factors for poor health globally. It is estimated that 2.5 million people worldwide die of alcohol related causes, including 320.000 young people between 15 and 29 years of age, which represents 9% of all people in that group. Europe is the region with the highest alcohol consumption. Amongst young people, early initiation of alcohol use has been shown to be linked to later binge drinking, heavy drinking and alcohol-related problems. Therefore, it is very important that youth workers are aware of the current situation and try to be active in the field of prevention, with the purpose of changing this worrying reality. It is crucial for youth organisations to be involved in prevention interventions which are classified as effective evidence-based prevention practices. This project addresses the need of youth organisations and youth workers to upgrade their knowledge and skills in order to improve the effectiveness of their interventions. The objectives of the project were: - to organize an international training, gathering around 40 youth workers, with experienced trainers, in Ireland, for a duration of 4 days (+2 traveling days) in April 2020; - to ensure a wide representation of youth workers from the western and northern European region - to build capacity among participants on three main topics: advocacy for more comprehensive alcohol policy, youth research on alcohol, and evidence-based alcohol interventions in youth organizations; - to provide networking opportunities among participants, which will result in common p rojects, related to the prevention and reduction of alcohol related harm; - to work in line with EU Committee on National Alcohol Policy and Action's Action Plan on Youth Drinking and on Heavy Episodic Drinking (http://goo.gl/fAfGCP).
