The title of the project is a reference to a quote by leading climate activist Greta Thunberg: "I am here to say, our house is on fire ... I want you to act as if our house is on fire. Because it is." Climate change has already started to become a visible problem, striking communities in the forms of very cold winters, long and hot summers, heavily polluted air and water, floods and earthquakes, desertification, etc. "We don't have a planet B" is a motto that we hear frequently these days. Climate change is a challenge that we cannot postpone anymore and we need to adopt more green behaviors and more sustainable lifestyles. Everyone needs to put in additional effort into pushing forward the protection of our environment as a topic of high importance if we want to have a bright future by ensuring environmental sustainability and sustainable development. The active participation of youth in environmental protection is especially of great importance for the future of Europe. The environment does not recognize borders and only international cooperation can lead to saving what nature has given to us. The recent climate strike all over the world showed how the young generation is committed to this cause. And we don't want to stay behind. That's why we decided to promote this project, to raise awareness for this topics, promoting also the use of the 3 R's of the sustainable circular economy (Responsibility, Resist, Reduce, Return, Repair, Reuse, Recycle, Restore, Respect and Reach Out). Only by adopting a more sustainable lifestyle will we be able to make the difference. And young people are the future of our world, literally. They should be the ones making the change. Besides that, education is the key for any revolution and this is no different. So we need to promote the ways to make these changes. Participants also had the chance to meet other youngsters from different parts of Europe and to exchange their experiences and know how, in order to acquire new personal and professional skills to make them better citizens in the European community. The project also promoted intercultural ideas and intercultural dialogue, contributing to a more inclusive and tolerant society. Our times are showing that intolerance is increasing and democracy is stepping back, so these are extremely important issues that need to be addressed too. Therefore, the main objectives of this project were to both inspire and educate 30 young participants from all over Europe to do better when it comes to the topics of environmentalism, recycling, responsible consumption habits and citizenship, and to also spread that impact in their local, and wider European, communities. To achieve these objectives we put special focus on educating the participants about simple changes that every person can undertake to reduce their Eco-footprint (especially the carbon footprint) and provided a safe space for mutual learning about these themes of recycling, environmental protection, garbage selection & removal and the benefits we gain from it. In summary, the objectives of the project were: -To introduce to the participants, and broaden their knowledge about, the topics of environmental protection and sustainable development. -To help the participants get a better picture of the current global challenges of sustainable development and climate change which are facing humanity. -To raise the participants' awareness of the benefits of the 10 R's of the sustainable circular economy (Responsibility, Resist, Reduce, Return, Repair, Reuse, Recycle, Restore, Respect and Reach Out), and the benefits of recycling, reusing of garbage, garbage selection and garbage removal. -To Inspire and motivate the young participants to become more active citizens as key environmental activists in their own local communities, to become involved and active in this field after learning how big the impact we leave on the Earth with our individual actions is, and to gain a deeper understanding of the motto “think globally – act locally”. -To give the participants opportunities to practice and develop their key competences and social skills; practicing teamwork, presentation, public speaking, problem solving skills & creative work, and therefore boosting their self-confidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction with a natural sense of accomplishment. -To provide space for the promotion of cultural diversity in Europe and intercultural understanding between youngsters coming from different social, cultural & religious backgrounds by promoting the European values of tolerance, respect and social cohesion & inclusion.
