Our primary objective was to broaden the scope and enhance the quality of music education in Iceland, specifically within school bands. We aimed to democratize the learning process, giving students more influence over their musical journey and tailoring teaching to individual needs. Our project was inspired by the work of Joan Chamorro, whose innovative methods have proven successful in fostering participation and nurturing musical talent. We focused on the following key areas: Promoting Inclusivity and Diversity: We wanted to ensure that quality music education is accessible to all, regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances. Innovative Teaching Methods: Our goal was to move music education into the hands of the participants, encouraging active engagement and fostering creativity. Professional Development: We aimed to equip our school band teachers with new teaching methods and approaches, enabling them to deliver high-quality and enjoyable music education. European Union's Youth Policy Alignment: We ensured our project aligns with the EU's youth policy, particularly the goals of inclusive societies, quality learning, and space and participation for all. International Collaboration: Recognizing the limited resources within Iceland, we sought inspiration and learning from international partners like Chamorro in Barcelona and the Kalamata Music School in Greece. Our project was ultimately designed to contribute to the broader goals of Reykjavik City's new education policy, which emphasizes social skills, self-empowerment, and informal learning. By infusing our music education with these values, we hoped to transform the way music is taught and experienced in our city.
